The demand of Spain for the re
turn of Gibraltar calls up ancient ea
memories.
That famous rock, held by the Brit
ish for more than two centuries, is
one of two twin promontories that
have puanled the entrance of the Med
iterranean since the dawn of history.
The other, now called Ceuta, stands'
ten rriles distant on the tip of the:
t
Mo.xun iKT.insj.a, marking the
apex of the Ajncnn continent j
The ancients called them the "Pil-.
lars of Hercules." Acoonline; to the '
old myth, Hercules, the Greek denii-j
pod, had pushed them apart to make
the wide, deep channel thnh which
the waters of the Mediterranean min
ple with those of the Atlantic. Like
all myth.; it doubtless shadowed forth
a truth. Geolopists say that Africa
and Europe were once joined at this
point by a rocky rid.e.
To the old Greeks those pillars
marked the limits of the known world.
In Homer's time the ocean beyor.J
them was a vspue reitm of fable and
terror. If the Phoenicians the Brit
ons of antiquity were ever accus
tomed to venturing through them,
they left little record of their adven-,
tures. Until shortly before the Cl.ris-1
tian era. therefore, Gibraltar marked
the jumpinp-off placo of civilization.
Now that little strait i the world's
greatest pateway of co: mcrce and
communication. And Great Britain
fruarda it, as she puards most of the
world"s important sea pates, dominat
ing the strait from the fortified rock
which has become in every civilized
land a symonym of invincible strenpth.
Spain asks for that rock, on the
pround that it is peopraphically a
part of the Spanish peninsula. Inas-:
much as the accepted peace platform
is concerned with the racial richts ra
ther than peopraphical traditions, it
is not likely that much attention will
be paid to the request. I
Gibraltar is but a tiny place, only a
couple of square miles in exten'. and
its inhabitants, thouph speakinp a
sort of Spanish, have not been pre-;
dominantly Spanish for 200 years. The
place is pretty thoroughly Anglicised.'
Moreover, the world is pretty well.
persuaded that Great Britain has not
abused her use of the famous pillar.
and can b trusted better than Spain
can if it is to remain under any par-
ticular national jruarmansbip. J
If Britain should jrive up Gibraltar, 1
the strait should of course be inter-;
nationalized, as the Dardanelles and
Bosporus are expected to be.
OCEAN OF PEACE WANTED
Hundreds of thousands of pounds of
TNT, one of the hiph expbxives
much used durinjr the war, have been
dumped into the sea off the coast of
New Jersey, in accordance with an
order of the railroad administration.
This deadly stuff by the carload has
been a standing menace ever since the I
armistice was sipned. Now some of
it has been shipped abroad and the
rest of it is disposed of in the sim-
plest manner known to man. It is a
(Treat pity that every menace which
war involves cannot be just as simply'
and easily eliminated. I
The world has no more desire to be
torn to pieces by war than to be blown
up by T N T. The sooner the neare
conference ireta top-ether and deter-1
mines upon a policy wide enoue-h and
deep enoue-h to swallow the disputes
of the world as the sea swallowed up
he explosives, the bolter for all con-'
cerned. I
