atand with regard to the strongest
bond of all the many bonds that go
to make a nation indivisible a com
mon speech?
Ten per cent of our adult popula
tion is unable to read the language of
our country or understand it unless it
is translated into some forcifm tongue.
Of the 'coming citizens' of this coun
try 18 per cent do not go to school at

read their orders nor understand them
nor read the letters they received from

If the principles which mean Amer
ica are to continue, education must in
crease. The man who cannot under
stand the plea addressed to him ex

addresses him in his own language, is
