DOXT BEAR" AMERICA
It is time to repent the famous ad
vice of old J. Pierpont Morgan to a
Wall Street friend: "Never be a K-ar
on the United States of America."
There are too many Americans just
now, not merely New York bankers
but businessmen in all parts of th.'
country, who are "bearing" the Cr.it
ed Slates. It is unpatriotic, and it is
foolish. It is unbusinesslike.
Morgan's implicit belief in the ever
lasting economic success of his coun
try was based on the solid rock of such
facta as these:
We have incomparably greater na
tural resources than any other na
tion on earth more potential wealth
in iron and copper and other metals
in fuel, in arable land, in timber, in
water power.
We have greater manufacturing fa
cilitiea than any other nation.
We have greater business energy
and ability than any other nation.
We are the largest body of intelli
gent, coherent people, speaking the
same language and having the same
culture and the same standards of life
and work, that exists in the world. We
therefore have the largest home mar
ket for goods that any nation has
and the greatest power of producing:
goods for export.
There are more potent reasons fo
optimism today than there were in
the elder Morgan's time. Not only
have we limitless power to produce
wealth, but we have or will have
an adequate fleet of merchantmen U'
carry it all over the world. And with
this unprecedented transportation
power, we have a foreign market, ere-'
ated by war's devastation and by our
own increased prestige everywhere,
that ia ready to absorb all we can pro
duce for years to come.
All we need, to enjoy this unpara
lleled opportunity, is to make the
transition from a war basis to a peace
basis. This transition will come more
easily and quickly than any of thes?
croakers imagine.
IT ISN'T YOUR TOWN. ITS YOU
(From Boston Chamber of Commerce
Current Affairs)
If you want to live in the kind of a
town
Like the kind of a town you like.
You needn't slip your clothes in a grip
And start on a long, long hike.
Youll only find what you've left be
hind For there's nothing that's really new
It's a knock at yourself when jtod
knock your town.
Tt isn't the Town it's Y'ou!
Real towns are not mads by men
afraid
Lest somebody else gets ahead.
When evervone works and noliody
shirks
You can raise a town from the dead
And if, while you make your personal
stake,
Your neighbors can make one, too,
Your town will be what you want to
see.
It Isn't the Town it's You!
