THE MORTGAGE ON GERMANY
The more those German armistice
terms are studied, the more one is im
pressed with the fact that they are
not really armistice terms at all. Thev
are a set of preliminary peace terms,
forced on Germany, by which Ger
many is delivered over to the allies
bound hand and foot, for the allies to
make what final peace terms they
like.
It is evident that there may be a
little difficulty in petting possession
of the personal property and real es
tate that Germany is under ol ligation
to turn over to the allied armies. It
can be done, however, and is being
done. Germany is even now in no po
sition to resist if she wanted to. When
the allies have advanced, acocrding to
schedule, and taken possession of all
the German territory eastward to the
Rhine, and the important bridgeheads
beyond the Rhine with a 20-mile rad
ius, we mav aafelv take our chance
Vhat Determines Meat and
Live-Stock Prices?
Some stock men still think that Swift & Company
and other big packers can pay as little for live-stock as
they wish.
Some consumers are still led to believe that the packers
can charge as much for dressed meat as they wish.
This is not true. These prices are fixed by a law of
human nature as old as human nature itself the law of
supply and demand.
When more people want meat than there is meat to be had, the
scramble along the line, to get it for them sends prices up. When
there is more meat than there are people who want it, the scramble
all along the line to get rid of it within a few days, while it is still
fresh, smds price3 down.
When prices of meat go up, Swift & Company not only can pay the
producer more, but has to pay him more, or some other packer will.
Similarly, when prices recede all down the line Swift & Company
cannot continue to pay the producer the same prices as before, and
still remain in the packing business.
All th pacl.cr can do is to keep the expense of turning stock into
moat et a mlrJi: r.:n, so that the consumer can get as much as
possible fcr his t.ioncy, and the producer as much as possible for his

SPECTACULAR COOPERATION
j A despatch from Adelaide, South
Australia, tel's of a building nehieve-
ent quite as remarkable as the mag
' i -ill construction work done in many
J cf our cantonments.
The thing constructed was a ten-
r.cre playground. It was built on what
was a quagmire the day before. Two
thousand workers from one of the
largest smelting works in the world
pei formed the labor. General man
ager, office bov, truck wheeler and al!
vorked side by aide.
When evening ci'me the playground
tood complete, with a floor of clean
white sea sand, pavilions, playground
rpparatus, wading pools, swings and
?vcn a garden of shrubs and palm
trees.
die by one, as each group of work
ers completed its part of the construc
tion, they cheered.
The despatch does not tell why the
. layground had to be constructed in a
j single day, nor why the entire per
t Sonne! of the smelting plant was en
; raged in the work. It merely tells
jthe story and leaves to the reader's
Kvn appreciation the sermon that such

DEATH i'OK YOl'NG HERO
I.O''H Nov. 21. A fair-haired.
I bl.u-eyed boy from the North Count rv
. lay dying for six mouths in an English
I hospital.
i He had been brought back from
; Vrance shot through the spine, and
! was a hopeless case from the begin
niag.
j I'unng those long and dreary six
months he never let one word of com-
' plaint escape him, and he seemed ul
; way to be smiling. He had one great
'consolation; he had become acquainted
with the Waverley novels, and in his
I last days he was reading Ivanhoe
! Gradually he became too weak to read
and the nurse would take the book and
read aloud to him.
She was reading on the last day of
all when the padre came and his fath
er and mother; and being a good lad.
he kissed his parents affectionately
ar.d listened very attentively to the
prayers, but the moment they were
over he turned to the nurse and whis
pered, ''Please go on reading, and as
fast as you can, for I do so want to
know the end."
And so she read him out of the
world with the great fight of Bois
Guillnrrt and Ivanhoe. while the spirit
of Walter Scott hovered about the
deathbed.
