On my rounds I ran into the electric
light plant of Claud Ellison, formerly
of Alhanv. at Kails Citv. Claud is the
whole business. He has a (food propo
sition and is attending to it faithfully.
Up in the woods, F. C. is an inter
esting place. A mill town.
Being county judge is one of the
most difficult of positions to fill and
not disgruntle someone. Judge E. C.
Kirkpatrick, who once resided in Al
bany for awhile, stepped on the toes
of some West Salem people and thev
anowed him under 140 to IT. He was
beaten in the county by 100 votes.
At Rickreall I met S. B. Burch, bro
ther of J. B. Burch of near Albany:
also his father, an oldtimer. Rick
reall used to be quite a flourmakinu
city, but the mill now is deserted ex
Tept by spiders; and one store covers
the field.
Close by is the farm of Congress
man Pat Mc Arthur.
Independence, long celebrated for its
hoDs and booze, has verv few of the
hops any longer, and hardly any booze.
except on armistice celebration days.
Occasionally I meet a man who re
minds me of the fellow who was so
lazy he just sat around and did noth
ing. Someone asked him how he man
aged things. "Oh," he said, "I sct.
and thinks, and then sometimes I just
seta."
George Conkey is a prosperous mer.
chant in Independence. He clerked in
the store of S. E. Young in 1900 dur
ing the period when people were ar
guing about when the 20th c?nture be
gan. Among his fellcT? cierf .- were
Fred W. Blumberg. Dr. W. E. Stew
art and Mrs. Edna Breckenridge Stew
art. He continues to think that Mr.
Young vis one of the finest men in
the world.
Fred Erickson, who built the Albanv
P. O., is doing a fine job on a new
building for the Farmers' State'Bank.
one of the prettiest in the city.
Am writing this in the lobby of the
Hotel Monmouth, which is also a dress
making parlor, with electric motor at
tachment. The presence of the school
ma'ams waiting for the flying of the
flu makes it a place worth while, and
a comfortable one during the heavy
rainstorm prevailing.
