ESTABLISHED IN 1885 THURSDAY. OCTOBER 31. 191S ELECT GARLAND Linn county is to be congratulate.! upon the fact that State Senator Sam Garland ha consented to accept a second term aa a member of the state legislature. A businessman of no small ability, a lawyer of wide experience and a splendid public su-aer, Mr. Curiam! is the type of man who should be en couraited to serve his district in a legislative capacity. If every voter in Linn county ha' the opportunity of askinp the coi loaKues of Senator Garland as to theit judgment of his loyalty to his constit uents and his standing among the member of the senate, the Democrat is willing to predict that he would be elected by almost a unanimous vote. There were few men :n the senstr who stood higher and none who mad a more creditable record than Senatot Garland of Linn. His defeat would be a monument t. partisanship and a misfortune for th county. PIERCE FOR GOVERNOR Without a sinele constructive mer ure as a monument to his four yeaiV tenure of office. Governor Withycombe has the temerity to assert that he is making his campaign for reelection upon his record. In fairness to the governor, how ever, it should be stated that in one regard at least he has made a re markable record. His administration has spent more money and obtained less concrete results for the funds ex pended than any other in the historv of the state- Take, as an example, the appropria tion of $600,000 for the organizatioi. of the state police. Washington, witV more 'factories and mills to guard than Oregon, assigned the work now done by the members of this organ ization to the peace officers of the va rious counties. Moreover, Washington has suffered no greater loss to her industries during the war period than Oregon. The governor feels, however. that the money is well spent, for a): the members are 100 per cent Withy combe partisans, and all doing their bit, at the taxpayers' expense, to heltj re-elect the "War Governor." Walter Pierce, the democratic nom inee, ia a progressive with a con structive platform. He has made good both in business and in a public ca pacity. He has the breadth of vision. VOTERS OF OREGON Justice F. A. Moore of the Su preme Court died last month, too late for the name of any candidate to succeed him to be placed on the Ballot. This condition makes it necessary to write in the name of your candidate. This is the most important posi tion in the Judicial system of the State. It is essential to choose a man of extensive legal training, of high character, and of broad vision. We commend for your consideration and vote J. U. CAMPBELL OF OREGON CITY j Resident of the State 30 years: I lawyer far 25 years; veteran of Spanish-American War and Phil- ' ippine Insurrection, having served with 2nd Oregon Regiment; mem ber of Oregon Legislature in 1!07 ; and 1909 sessions; Judge of the 5th Judicial District 91-2 years.
