YCOM HE'S CAN DUA( Y
The people of Oregon have had four
years of Withycoml. They have ha.l
ample opportunity to lake me meas
ure of the man, seirrecate his political
mistakes from his virtues and to for.n
an intelligent opinion of his qualifica
tions for the hich office to which he
aspire.
We are puilly of disclosing no se
cret when we state that the governor
has drawn his votes from the rural
districts and his political revelations
from Multnomah county. When the
governor needed advice and counsel he
went to the men who have acquired all
of the riirht. title and interest in the pj
litical machine which in days pone by
attained its irreatest power under the
leadership of Joe Simon and Jack Mat
hews. He soupht the advice of prac
tical politicians and acted upon it wi:'n
a childlike faith in their judgment.
As an illustration, take the recent
appointment of Conrad Olson of Port
land to a place on the supreme bench
Endowed with a pleasing personality
and possessed with a rare gift for
making friends, Olson as a political
campaign manager is admittedly a
"scream"; but, prior to his discover.
by the governor, no one ever accusal
him of being timber for the highest
court in the state.
It is hardly an exaggeration to state
that with a few notable exceptions, ev.
ery political appointment made by t
governor during his tenure of office
has been dictated by the same element
that made the appointment of Olson
possible.
Withycombe has been, and if re
elected will continue to be, a rubber
stamp for special political interests
who have discovered in his easygoing
personality and political inexperience.
a pliable tool with which to pry loose
the political plums. His election i-.
1914 was an accident and the pn
tical politicians have successfully col
lected all of the insurance.

OUR UKRAINIANS
One million Ukrainians in the Unit
ed States and Canada have formed a
federation to Americanize their peo
ple. At frequent meetings the aims
of the allies and the principles of
American citizenship are taught.
These Ukrainians have given thou
sands of soldiers to our army anl
bought millions of dollars' worth of
Liberty Bonds.
Ukrainia in Russia was to feed the
Germans, but from across the sea
speeds the answer: "The only food
Ukrainia will give Germany is food
for thought."
One million Ukrainian shoulders put
to the wheel on which Prussian des
potism is slowly being broken.
In the failure of that hope, we mav
read the failure of all German hopes
Every German conquest, at the mo
ment of realization, like "Dead Sea
fruit," turns to bitter ashes in hc-r
mouth.
