Ij"" STAMPING OUT THE SLAVS The question of what to do with the Slav ia no question at all to German "We must exterminate them!" i the unvarying answer. Deputy Wichtl, of the German partv of Austria, in a recent speech con gratulated Germany upon its success up to the present, in having "annihil ated Serbia, Montenegro and Russia.' The next job would be to stamp out, root and branch, the Slave of Austria Hungary. He waa cheered. The speaker looked forward confi dently to the time when the Slavs would be wiped off the face of East ern Europe. "And when that time cornea," he concluded, "there will no longer .be two states, but only one Great Germany. It will be one big German House, where only German will be spoken, only German ideas thought, and German battles fought. Then we shall wage new war. Wc shall deliver three mighty blows bv forcing our way to America, subdu ing the whole Orient, and establishing German power over Japan and China!' Naturally, one of the steps in ac complishing this German ambition would be to oppose vigorously tne formation of Czechoslovak or Jugo alav states. From the German point of view this is a beautiful dream. But the Slavs have a natural prejudice against be ing exterminated, root and branch, and wiped off the face of Eastern Europe. And it ia quite possible that they mav have more than the Germans to aav in the final disposition of themselves and their territory. Certainly tne neat and effective way in which t he Czechoslovaks have been cleaning ud large pieces of "anpihilated" Russia and restoring it to action against the Hun would seem to argue future suc- And the wisdom of the allied na tions in recognizing the Czechoslovak state is convincingly shown by this speech of Herr Wichtl's.
