OUR MIGHTY ARMY
The entire "unorganised militia" ol
the United States is now in process ol
organisation. Last year we register
ed 10,000,000 of it. Now we have list
ed about 13,000,000 more.
There is a potential army of 23,000.
000 men, a force incomparably great
er than has ever before been placed at
the disposal of any nation for mili
tary purposes. Russia herself, though
more populous than the United States,
was never able to realise such vast
manpower. It puta in the shade anv
army ever formed in Asia or Europe,
even in this stupendous war of ' na
tiona. Nearly 2,000,000 of this army are
already in France, fighting or readv
to fight. Nearly 1,000,000 more are
training in our camps, and soon t
take ship. Two additional millions
will follow, as fast as they can be
rushed through the cantonment rout
ine. Half a million are in the navy.
with the number growing steadily.
From that great reservoir of 23000.
000 we can draw as many mora as
may be necessary to finish the job on
hand. S
Those chosen men are the cream of
our ablebodied, ableminued manhood
In effectiveness they are superior to
any similar bulk left at home, and su
perior to any numerically equal bodv
of fighters anywhere. They represent
' our first line of defense which is our
line of offense. 1
But having taken this cream, we
have by no means drained or impov
erished the fighting power of the
great reservoir. Many more millions
could be found who might give as good
account of themselves in a battle as
the boys already under arms, and who
would be eagerly welcomed Djr anv
other army in Europe. And behind
them are still other millions, doing
the necessary work of hand or brain
in the home trenches the factories,
mines, railroads, farms and offices at
home.
Every man from 18 to 45 may take
just pride in belonging to such ai
army.

COMPULSORY ENGLISH
American communities, says Magis
trata Cobb of New York City, make it
too easy for foreigners to get along
in this country without learning' Eng
lish. There are too many notices
translated for them into their native
languages, too many newspapers
printed for them, too many interpret
ers ready to help them, and there is
too much legal tolerance of their fail-

In no other country, he says, is ig

;n European countries generally, a

in court and elsewhere. In London,
ith its great foreign population, the
lolice courts have no interpreters as

If in the past Americana themselves,

Then is now, and will be hereafter,
