Bumping around the country I have had bumped out of me all sentiment of sectional jealousy and have learned to estimate the value of localities with impartiality, or think I have. Here's Corvallis, Albany's old rival, a fine place with one of the best agri cultural colleges in the world. There is an air of prosperity here. Or course a good many people have ' gone to the shipyards for high wages, the same aa from other valley towns; but this offers no excuse for people to call a town dead, as many do all the valley towns. I lose my patience over the constant nagging of some, with "dead" aa the leading expression, be csuse of the changed conditions. It is time for us to raise again the old cry: "Boost and dont knock." A popular Corvallis man who once captured an Albany girl is Mayor Lowe, also a live wire. Mrs. J. C. Haramell and daughter Blanche are in charge of the Hotel Corvallis, a neat place. Miss Blanche is also kept busy with a large class of music students. George Ronizle, also formerly of Albany, is chief clerk Ralston Motor Co. Another Corvallis man who captur ed an Albany girl fs Byron Taylor. The said A. G. having spent most of her life as a nextdoor neighbor to Misfits, continues to keep on the good side of him by feeding him with well cooked trout caught by herself. Sam Hartsock, once of Albany, a college football celebrity, now famous as a kodak fiend, all the way from 'lie turbid waters of tang Tom to the limpid Little Willamette, continues to dispense drugs, along with kodaks. Back of the Firing Line Modern war conditions demand that our armies must have behind them na tional solidarity, the coordination of all the vast activities and an indus trial army many times greater than the Nation's fighting forces. The Nation's capital is linked with all these varied activities by the toll and long distance lines of the Bell System. Thonsands of miles of special wire systems have been turned over to the Government for its exclusive use. Switchboards in the Government departments at Washington have been enlarged and new ones installed. Right of way is given to Govern ment business over all commercial lines, so that the Government chiefs may keep In constant touch with every phase of the Nation's great task and direct its progress intelligently and effectively. In organizing the military activities of the country, the Government has had the effective cooperation of the BIi Telephone System, which even in peace times reached 70,000 communities and now extends to the head quarters of every Army Department and Naval District in the United States. THE PACIFIC TELEPHONE & TELEGRAPH COMPANY school In Albany. Dr. J. R. N. Hell and Bob Johnson have been in Albany enough times to be mentioned. Fred Weblier, a Portland architect, is here doing some work on the First National bunk. Ho was iHim in Al bany, a aon of Albany's old-time Chiet Engineer, Joe Weber. I met Dennis Stovall, the, author, to day. He is a writer of boys' stories for Eastern ntngaiinca, and is unable to meet the demand. He has learned that writing stories is not an inspira tion, but work. Banker A. J. Johnson is another I .inn county product. And there are others I expect to meet Returned to Canby Corporal Clarence Wicka returned to Fort Canby this morning after a visit here with his folks.
