Girla are being urged to enliat for
, the nursing aervice aa men ueed to be
" urged to enliat in army, navy and ma
rine corps. la "it not time that the
gathering of women aa well as men
' be put upon a more sensible basis, and
the nurses drafted in some fair and
( reasonable way!
The aame arguments apply in both
- cases. The girls who think they would
like to do nursing, or who think it is
their duty, are no more sure of their
fitness than the lads were. Anions
: the girls who never thought of the
. matter there ia quite as good material
.1 i. AJ ? tmintr for

nursing service is as valuable for girls
to have as the army training is for
the boys.
Th. benefits of giving military
training to boys taken from all kinds
of communities are already provine
incalculable in their leavening influ
ence uoon those communities. The
lories of the lads from tenement
' homes who went home on furlough and
insisted that the bathtubs be emptied
of the stuff stored therein and used
. for their proper purpose is typical.
The gospel of fresh air, exercise,
regular hours, proper food, temper
ance, discipline, self-control, is being
spread broadcast by these boys. Yi ny
ahould not their sisters have the same
opportunity to learn the practical lev
" sons of hytriene, cleanliness, competent
care of the sick, that the nursing gives
to women? Why should they not
learn to take care of themselves, as
trained nurses have to?
Some women are better fitted bv
temperament and adaptability to be
' nurses than others, just as some men
naturally take to soldiering. But in
both cases training is the important
factor. And as almost any man in
good physical shape to start with can
be made into a good soldier, so can
almost any woman of good physique
and mentality be made into a compe
tent nurse.
Tht demand for women with nurs
ing training is going to increase rap
idly for a number of years. It will
not cease immediately upon the close
of the war. The idea of the draft may
seem radical, but with the men it has
succeeded admirably. It will bear
thinking about for the girls.

Back of the Firing
Line
Modern war conditions demand that our armies must have behind them na
tional solidarity, the coordination of all the vast activities and an indus
trial army, many times greater than the Nation's fighting forces.
The Nation's capital is linked with all these varied activities by the toll
and long distance lines of the BeH System. Thousands of miles of special
wire systems have been turned over to the Government for Its exclusive
use. Switchboards in the Government departments at Washington, have
been enlarged and new ones installed. Right of way is given to Govern
ment business over all commercial lines, so that the Government chiefs
may keep in constant touch with every phase of the Nation's great task
and direct its progress intelligently and effectively.
In organizing the military activities of the country, the Government has
had the effective cooperation of. the Bell Telephone System, which even
in peace times reached 70,000 communities and now extends to the head
quarters of every Army Department and Naval District in the United States.

The most dramatic problem con
fronting the world today except the
war! A picture not inspired by fic
tion hut by reality! A gripping screen
transfer from life itself picturiiint:
an astounding and spectacular situa
tion! Rev. Paul Smith of the Central
Methodist church of San Krisco, last
spring stirred his state by dynamic
revelutious of social infamy.
Knemics sought to nullify his cru
sade by an audacious coup. More than
400 women of the streets railed upon
the clergyman, surprised him In his
pulpit, and asked: "You aim to take
from us our one means of subsistence,
(ranting you succeed, what are you
going to do with us?"
But the pastor who had proved that
system of body homlrtr,. did exist,
turned the tatdea upon his opponents
by turning his church into a reception
temple and, assisted by his congrega
tion, worked out solutions for the com
plex problem.
And the evil was effaced virtualtv
overnight and a new life for the great
er part of his callers begun.
It is this picturesque episode and
its prologue and consequences that
the photoplay here heralded depicts,
with its scenes and its cople reul,
and with the Rev. Paul Smith himself,
in person, and a Clean-Up league that
arose to support him, its sponsors and
circulators, believing that the photo
drama may accomplish in other sec
tions some of the good for San Fran
cisco and the state of California.
