MILLIONS IN ARMS
We have more than 800,000 men in
France. We -hall have more than 1.-
000,000 there by July 1. These es
timates are from official sources and
if they err at all they err on the side
of underestimate rather than exagger
ation.
. That is a small part of the story.
Marshal General Crowder announces
that we shall have 3.000,000 men under
arms, here and overseas, by the first
of July. They will include 1,000,000
volunteers and 2,000,000 selective serv
ice men.
By next January, according to sim
ilarly modest estimates, we shall have
no less than 1,500,000 men in France.
That minimum, be it noted, allows for
the shipment of only 500,000 in the
last six months of the year. We have
been shipping troops lately at the rate
of 200,000 or more a month. Perhaps
we can do better than the promised
1,500.000.
By nut January, too, it is now stat
ed, we shall have a total of 4,000,000
under arms at home and abroad. Bv
tiis time next year it is fair to as
sume, at least three-fourths of that
number will have completed their es
sential training. If so, we shall prob
ably have, making due allowance for
wastage, an army of somewhere near
3,000,000 in France next June.
' Maybe the army will be larger than
that. The present shipping outlook
and the smooth working of our soldier
factory give good grounds for optim
ism. Who,, in the. light of recent tri
umphs, can set limit to the next 12
months' achievements ?
We reckon our army already in
terms of millions. " There will be more
and more of those millions until West
arn Europe swarms with Yankees in
khaki They will sweep over Germany
as the locusts swept over Egypt.

SOLDIER MORALS
We know that the morale of the
American troops in France is all right
The battle reports testify to that. But
how about their morals? Are they
succumbing to the supposedly insid
ious wiles of foreign lands, where the
spirit of adventure tempts them and
home restraints are lacking?
. Reassuring testimony on this point
has peer, given many times. Now we
have additional corroboration from a
commissioner sent abroad by the Anti
Saloori League. His mission was to
find the extent to which drinking and
vice prevail in the seaport cities where
our. fighting men land and in the
camps where they finish their train
ing.' He pronounces the Yankee lads
"far above the average in clean and
sober living."
'The American military and naval
forces in Europe," he says, "are a
splendid body of men. Taken as a
whole, they are so clean, so sober and
SO efficient that they bring a feeling
bi pride to every American who sees
them.'!.
Which is exactly what nearly all of
us expected.
