ESTABLISHED IN 1865
WICHITA AND GERMANY.
In William Allen White's new book
The Martial Adventures of Henry
and Me," Henry tells us what he
thinks of U-boat warfare while pacinj
the deck of a boat in the war son.
What be says is worth hearing.
"I've been thinking about this U
boat business; how it would be if wc
had the German's job. I hsve been
trying to think if there is any one u
Wichita who could go out and run a
U-boat the way Germans run U-boatv
and I've been trying to imaine him sit
ting on the front porch of the Country
Club or down at the Elks' Club talk
ing about it: telling how he lured the
captain of a ship by his distress signal
to come to the rescue of a sinking ship
and then destroyed the rescurer, and
Pre been trying to figure out now tne
fellows sitting around him would take
-" it. They'd get up and leave. He would
be outcast unspeakable, and no brag
or bluff or blare of victory would
gloss over his act. We simply dont
- think the German way. We have a
loyalty to numaniiy aeeper uian our
patriotism, inere are certain inings
self-respecting men can't do 'and live
in Wichita. But there seem to be no
restrictions in Germany."
Trying to see your neighbors as
Germans, carrying out German orders
and fighting the German way,brings
out stronger than ever the contrast
in moral sianaarus oi uemmnj miu
: Other ' lands. - Wichita widens ' and
spreads and becomes not only every
serf-respecting American community,
but the whole civilized world.
There are certain thin?s self-respecting
men can't do and live outside
the Central Empires. But there ore no
restrictions there, and there worft be
so lone as the military ideal of con
quest and power holds peoples of
that benighted region in its grip.
When self-respecting men can no long
er do thees things and live in Germ
any, the war will be thoroughly won.
SCARING I'NCLE SAM.
- On the afternoon when news reach
ed New York that the U-boats were
sinking ships off the Jersey coast, 100
men enlisted in the naval milita. They
said they "wanted revenge." There has
been a steady stream of volunteers all
over the country ever since, not only
or. this particular defense organiza
tion, but for regular naval service.
Army recruiting, too, has been stimu
lated. And a new fighting spirit has
. swept through the selective service
camps.
There is a new spirit, too, in the
anipyards, in the arsenals, in the air-
plane and munition factories. There is
a new spirit in congress. There is a
new spirit Wherever men work or con
gregate. .- The war has been "brought home to
us." And Instead of being scared, as
the Kaiser expected, we're knuckling
down, more zealously than ever to the
job of beating the piratical Hun. Am
ericans, like Englishmen and French
men, don't scare worth a penny.
AMERICANIZING AMERICANS
' The war has given a great impetus
to the Americanization of foreign-born
residenta and citizens of this country.
Now Oklahoma has begun a campaign
for the Americanization of Americans.
If it sounds strange at first just
think it oVer minute. Before this
war the average American had only
the haziest and rosiest Impression
of American history. Boys and girls
received a smattering of education in
the schools about the government. On
ly the debating teams ever delved far
into real problems of national or mu
nicipal life. And social problems were
left to the specializing college student.
In other words, Americans took a
good deal for granted and went their
'own many ways without any very def
inite information about their nation as
a whole, living, growing thing. The
war has made us face a good man
of these things for ourselves, without
waiting for any organized campaign.
