SINKING SHIPS I'OUTELY
The strangest thin about the U
boat operations along our eastern
coast baa been the comparative de
cency ahown by the German command
era. Apparently the rulea of legitimate
cruiser warfare, which the United
States has always insisted on, and the
breaking of which brought us into the
war,- have been observed throughout
this raiding campaign. The U-boats
have given our crews fair warning
and allowed them to get away in their
boats. Generally speaking, they have
behaved almost as British or American
sailors might behave in similar cir
cumstances.
The commanders have gone so far
as to apologize for sinking our ships
and to entertain the officers as their
honored guests. It is long since we
have expected anything of thia sort
from Germany.
Has the Prussian suddenly changed
his nature? We cannot think so. The
raid has all the earmarks of propa
ganda rather than military purpose,
and thia unwonted humanity is part
of the plan. The Hun evidently wants
to persuade the American people that
he is not so bad as he has been paint
ed that he is really a fair fighter,
and the stories of atrocities commit
ted on the other side of the ocean have
been inventions or exaggerations.
It is a clever move, but the Amer
lean people will not be fooled by it
We know only too well what the Ger
mans have done by sea and land to
be gulled by any such trick as this.
Huns are still Huns, and will be until
we have destroyed their power for
eviL
Again we have the government ad
vertising the superiority of "brown
rice,'' and again there is a chorus of
baffled housewives inquiring where
they can buy brown rice.
