THE MEAT LIE
' Another mischievous lie, apparent
' ly spread by pro-German influences,
is at work in many parta of the coun
try. It ia to the effect that the Unit
ad Statea government wants no fresh
. meat to be killed for three months
this summer.
The lie should be promptly nailed
wherever it appears. .The government
wants nothing of the sort. It expects
cattle, sheep and hogs, to be killed
. about aa usual All it asks is that, of
the meat thus provided we should eat
little less than usual, particularly
of pork products, ao that we may send
more to our allies.
There are more meat animals in
the country than ever before. We
have been killing more than ever and
exporting more meat than ever, anJ
expect to continue doing ao.
The mischief in this particular lie
consists in the fact that if it were be
lieved and less livestock were killed
and less meat provided, soon there
would not be enough meat available
for export. Moreover, because meat
. waa scarce here at home, our people
would consume more wheat and thus
deprive our allies of bread.
-
CHEAP FOOD
Still people are not eating enough
potatoes to finish up the surplus left
from last year's crop. Old potatoes in
. most communities are a drug on the
market.
From the mere standpoint of. food
. values, it's absurd not to eat more of
.them when they're so cheap and so
nourishing.' You can get more for
your money right now in old potatoes
than in almost any other foodstuff.
Besides, we all ought to eat pota
toes in order to save whAt, to keep
our allies from starving.
And there are other sound reasons.
' Eating up the old potatoes will save
the new ones till they're larger and
thus increase the food supply instead
of diminishing it. Also, a steady de
mand for the old potatoes, as long as
' they last, will keep the price from
slumping so badly that farmers will
be deterred from raising tubers this
season. Many of them are saying al
ready that they dont feel like going
in for potatoes again because there's
no money in it. They ought to be
encouraged to plant more than ever.
