lo Wide World Frank lledce But
ler describe a vnpnr bath Id the land
of the Lapp. He aaya:
The bathhouse la a small wooden
structure generally situated anme way
from the dwelling house. It Is dMded
Into two compartment, one to nndres

which produce the steam. The oven
la arched with large atones or pebble,
and healed by a Are placed beneath.

which contain a plar for the head,
the attendant come In and bathe you.
Cold water la thrown over the atones

JOKE ON SCHOOL VISITOR
Fortunately Hamilton Mable Waa Well
Able to Appreciate Unconscious
Humor of the Children.
The bite Hamilton W. Mable, the
well-known American essayist, waa
one of those genial men who enjoyed
a Joke on themselves. Illustrating this
phase of Mr. afable's character. It Is
told that when he was student Mr.
Mahle made an address In which he
told this story:
He bad visited a school in Philadel
phia In which there was a dally fire
drill. The teacher regularly naked the
students, "Children, whst would yoo
do if Are were to break oat In this
building r The children all repeated
In chorus, "We would rise lo oar
places, step Into the alale, and march
quietly oat of the building." On the
morning when Mr. Mable visited the
school, while be was sitting quietly on
the platform, the teacher stepped be
fore the pupils and said. "Children,
whst would yon say if I were to tell
yon that Mr. Mable Is to speak to yoo
thl morning?" The children prompt
ly replied In chorus, "We would rise
In our places, step Into the aisle, and
march quietly out of the building."
Interesting Life Statistic.
On the authority of experts repre
senting forty-three leading life lurar
aaea eompasles en tha Oaltad Btarsa,
K appear that a aplnsteT Dvss longer
than a married woman. Business wom
en lire longer than business men. A
woman who takes an endowment pol
icy lives longer than a woman who
tnkes an ordinary life policy. It Is not
easy to explain why an unmarried
woman survives a matron, nor why a
business woman survives a busi
ness man, but the longevity of the
endowment woman la believed to be
due to the determination to live until
the policy matures.. Will power Is
hardly less Important In many cases
than physique, and must always be
reckoned with. Even In disease a man
or woman possesses a natural tend
ency toward health, and cures which
often are attributed to medicine are
really the assertion of the wUX Cap
per's Weekly.
Malda Hill.
It Is now more than a century since
an English army fought la Italy, and
won the battle of Malda over the
French. Napoleon had vowed to con
quer Sicily, and for that purpose the
French pushed on Into Calabria, and
began to make extensive preparations.
But tho English forces for the de
fense of Sicily prepared to deal a blow
on the mainland. A force of 5.000
men landed In the bay of St Emphe
tnla. and the battalions of the French
fell before the bayonets of the Brit
ish. Napoleon's hopes were shattered
at a stroke. But the "dally-breader"
from Kllborn traveling Into London,
by way of the Edgward road, never sus
pects as he passes by Malda Dill and
Malda Vale, the origin of the name.
