SUPREME COURTESY .
The story oi General -Maude',
death, v. butt lu just been rcvcalcvl
by tue tmtih government, is a hu
man narrative so romantic and dram
atic, and o cuaractcri.lK oi the
lirituh army, tliat it might have uci
an invention oi Killing.
The brilliant leader oi the British
military ouu.-. He considered uiuM.-it
content ith discharging bra torn
expeditionary force operating asaiust
the Turks iu Mesopotamia was not
content with discharging lia forma,
military duties. He considered him
self a sort of ambassador irora t,'ii
British tmptrc to the races anu
tribes of that region. He? nude a
practice of dealing with the native,
in a friendly and hekpiul spirit, care
fully cultivating the social ameniiio
customary among them.
In accordance with this policy hi
vUited one day a plague-stricken com-,
munity. Gen. Maude knew the dan
ger he was running. He was not
obliged to go there-. But he went
nevertheless. WJhen he entered die
village he wis received with formal
courtesy and was offered the cere
monial cop" to drink. The general
knew' that one taste might snear
death. He had forbidden his owr.
escort to touch food or drink in that
place. But it would have been dis
courteous to refuse the cup. And as
a British gentleman, he unhesitating-
ly accepted fhe cup and drank. He
died of cholera a iew days later.
It may seem a useless and fooli.-h
sacrifice. Perhaps it is. And yet.
sucH a death may have a more pow
erful and salutary effect i eastern
Turkey than any subsequent military
victories which General Maude might
have won.
The sacrifice was not lost on the
natives, particularly on tfie Arab
tribesmen. They have become bet
ter friends of the English, and have
fought the Turks more effectively, be
cause of their regard for a gentle
man who so respected their traditions
that he preferred death to discour
tesy. It is by such a spirit that Great
Britain has succeeded so notably wit,h
colonial development and administra
tion in tiie ancient, ceremonious East
where races are especially difficult
to understand and control. Nobody
can imagine a Prussian officer doing
what General Maude did. And in tha'
very fact we can see the chief rea
son why Germany has failed as a
colonizing power. In t!e lorn; run.
courtesy is a stroneer governing
force than the mailed fist.
The Irish question is being settled
-in the usual way.

A ve-y interesting pUico is the
city market along Yamhill street, from
Slh to First street. There you can
get anything eatable imaginable, and
some things that are not eatables,
dogs for instance. Besides vege
tables and fruits are numerous nov
elties, such as home made salads, and
Dutch cheese. Things are fresh, at
a lower price than usually sold else
where, and are right before one for
inspection. Anyone can have a booth
by paying Ute price, 2Sc a day. Among
the salespeople are some fine-looking
women from the country, among them
being Mrs. Pearl Wallace Washburn,
of near Oregon City, daughter of W.
L. Wallace of near Lebanon, and
niece of Dr. J. P. Wallace. There
are no egge along the street that look
fresher than tnose at her stand.
Charlie Warner has started for
