ALBANY JAIl,T OKMOCBAT, TliUUSDAY, FUBRUARY J, Kll tniwa in DaHy Democrat WmT H.H O R X IBROOki PuTliaher. Entered at the pnstoffice 11 Albany. Oregon, at second class matter. r" "business matter In ordering- changes of address, tub- cribera aliould always give old as ell ai new addressee. Established in IKS THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 7. 191 THE IDLE GIRL IS NEEDED Every newspaper and magaiint which has a question and answer dc parlmcnl finds its mail flooded wilh queries from tiirla who want to do tomcthtni! for their country. I nry want to he Ked Cross nurses and go to France. They want to write to lonely soldier boys. They knit and they write letters to editors, and tney are filled with romantic zeal. To all these young women there is one stirring call, hnter a hos uital! The army hospitals need trained nurses hundreds and hundreds ot t.hem, both here and abroad. The hospitals and dispensaries ol every city and town, the visiting nurse as sociation of every village, need more help. It would hardly be possible for too manv young women to volun teer ior this service providing the young women are well and strong and mean business. The way to do it is to take hos pital training. There is no royal road to nursing. Untrained people, male or female, in any responsible position are not only useless, but sources of danger. The road to nursing in France lies through the nearest hospital's hardest toil. But that is w.here the need is iow. It is the great chance for the young women of the country to show their patriotism and the stuff that's in them. One of the things we have to be thankful for, in the midst of our war troubles, is that we didn't go to war with Mexico. WOOD BIDS WANTED O. A.
