OUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLVE -

Another New Year's Day in the
trendies the fourth lor our allies,
the first for us. How many more
w ill there he :
Another ear of bloodshed begins,
of strained effort on the part of whole
nations, of privation and suifcrmg and
sorrow.
Will this year bring victory? Will
it bring peace?
For America the day is full of high
seriousness. We know that we are
facing the most eventiul year in half
a century, possibly the most fateful
vear since our national birth.
We are not overwhelmed by th
thought. We are full of hope, more
than any other country on the face
of the earth today. We know that
we must spend a-nd lose and suffer.
We have counted the cost, and decid
ed that the game is Vorth it, and are
ready to pay. Our eyes are fixed on
the goal, and conscious of our vigor
and righteousness, we have no doubt
of reaching it.
Another New Year's Day may roll
around with the world's armies still
battling at Armageddon and the Beast
thai menaces civilization still unslain.
Very' well. then. Victory will come
the next year. Or the year after.
That it will come, and come before
.the world is quite ruined by the
struggle, we are certain.
. The United States occupies a noble
place today among the nations of the
earth. Every American may enjoy
his share of the world's respect, and
along with it, the glow 6f self-respect
that comes from having resolutely set
about a great and noble undertaking.
The American people's New Year's
resolution is, to make America and
all the rest of the world safe against
brutal aggression, so that nations as
well a individuals may go freely
about their own aft'airs without fear.
We all share in that resolve. And
we shall keep it.
Two men coming to our notice
want to be State Treasurer, just why.
we do not know. One is State Sen
ator E. D. Cn?ick of Albany, a prime
favorite oi the icw?:ia;icr boys of the
state, and the other is O. M. Plum
mer of Portland w-ho has gained con
siderable notoriety throusrh his ag
gressiveness manifest as member of
the Portland ?chool board. Others
mentioned for the .place are Williams,
now city treasurer of Portland, and
T. F. Ryan, chief deputy to State
Treasurer Kay of Salem.
Just why any man who lias a good
salary or business of bis own wants
to be state treasurer is not for us
to say, but usually the voter is not
very far out of the way when he
votes for the man on whom almost
universal praise !-as been hi aped by
the frwss of the M:it, Senator Cu
sick made an excellent senator, and
won the praise of every newspaper
man who followed the careers of the
men sent to the legislature. But of
course this is a trifle early for cam
paigning; we meant only to tell the
facts as we remember them. Coos

Today I got caught in a Red Cross
drive wilh the Mis'cs Jones & Can
field, poprlar Albany art experts. It
was manipulated by the F.Iks, who do
things wil.h a rush. The five com
panies hurried apparatuses to Sixth
and Alder streets, with janKling bells
and horns, as if to a fire.
This drew an immense crowd. Then
squads of soldiers herded the people
in, and no one was allowed to pass
Eastburn Bros.

At the opening of the tall Yeon
building M. Montgomery, a former
S. P. airent at 'Albany, held me up
.;nd we had an old-tune visit. He
lias been at Sheridan for a good many
years and invited me over, promising
to asMt in painting the town red
with a big feed.
Strange, but the same day I ran t
upon another former Albany railroad I
man. Wil Marriman, longer ago than I
Montgomery at Albany. He was then j

Merriman is a brother of Mrs. Chas. !
Fronk. With him when I met him
was Earl Fronk. whom I think was
born in Albany. I
For some time there have been a
good many Red Cross speeches at
the Meier & 'Frank corner. One day
I heard part of a good address made
by George Colwell, a native of Linn
county, and one of 17 children: a
prominent man in the law business
here. i

the Red Cross work.
The knititis epidemic continues. It
