are hundred oi civilian in spec tor

hv a commissioned otitccr and their
ii tidings verified before tlic invoices
will be paid by the treasury depart
ment. Could the people see the va-t
stores here they would marvel at it
and possibly ask w hat the govern
ment really intended to do wit,h it
alt. It is not to be marveled at that
there seems a shortage of material
in this country w hen the needs ot
the army and navy are considered
pal amount. The deflection of so
much raw material lor war purposes
naturally leaves a shortage ior other
uses and that remaining brings prices
:"ar in excess of anything ever thought
possible in peace times.
I'iiere are more "Dinyes" hef than
I .have ever seen in my lite. Beiru:
som h of the Ma-oti and Dixon line
it must naturally follow that a great
per cent oi the papulation are of the
iui:ro race. They are a happy-go-lucky
clas and are everywhere in
eidence iloini; cMTy conceiv able kind
( labor. W e employ hundreds of
them at the depot and of course they
never can be driven or coerced into
tb'iiikr work when it is possible to
lav on the job.
I.ouisillc and Jeficrsonville are
t: e dirtiest places I ever saw. Really
said to be more so than Pittsburg
u account of the extensive use of
sni't coal. No one expects or even
tries to be always immaculately clean.
i live in Louisville and make my .
connections to woik by electric line.
1 believe that X would die ot lonell-)
ness W obliged to stay in t,his tor- j
saken place always.
Unc thing has impressed itself on j
my mind. That is the superiority of ;
the West over the Middle West anii
South. While there may be more
factories and labor more extensively
employed in these sections there re
mains the fact that ours is a prac
tically new and undeveloped land
where opportunity spells big on ac
count oi natural resources and great
areas awaiting .development. To a
man with red blood in his veins the
Pacific slope and the West offers so
much that appears in the way of
sports. Hunting and fishing is un
known in these parts, except for a
few rabbits and small quail fishing
is confined to bass fishing and from
what 1 can gather the Willamette
there oilers everything in this line
of sport that thev enjoy.
The greatness of the whole North
west stands out greater when one
leaves it all and finds himself in the
midst of old and worn settlements
that look as old as old can be and
the people asleep without civic priJe
or anything that makes 4or clean
streets, painted buildings and green
yards. Nothing like that around th.s
old town of Jettcrsonville. Like Rip
Van Winkle tht lay asleep for years
and then came to the one differ
ence is that in these parts they have
not yet awakened nor do I know
when they will.
So vou see wien I leave this war
game after the thing has been fought
out to the right kind or a tinish and
victory perches on our banners. I
am coming back to the land where
flows the Oregon and where God has
piled up the earth in great moun
tains. Respectfully,
F. C. STELLMACHER.
