WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 21.
A VICTORY OF LIES
It is now clear that the big Austro
Gcrman success against Italy was a
victory less of arms than of lies
It was an unparalleled campaign o
falsehood and treachery that broke
the Italian frr.it and opened northern
Italy to the invaders.
On the evening of the German ofen
ive the Teutons managed to circu
late among the Italian troops forged
editions of veil known Italian news
papers such as the Giornale d'ltalia
and the Corners della Sera. These
edition contained false stories oi
tumult and revolt in southern Italy.
of uprising in Tuscany, of English
soldier firing upon Italian women
and children, of French cavalry rid
ing over the dead bodies oi Italian
citixen.
The effect on the Italian army may
be imagined. And to this sort of
sportsmanship the Germans added the
following masterpiece of Prussian
strategy:
They had placed, opposite the sec
tor where they meant to open their
drive. Austrian Socialist troops, and
had encouraged these troops in frat
emuing with the er emy. Large num
ber of Italians were taken in by that
trick. They believed that the Teu
ton were sincere when they asked
why fellow-Socialists, eager for
peace, should keep on killing each
other. Perhaps the Teuton Social
iits really were sincere, and were
tricked themselves by their superiors.
At any rate, after the peace-poison
had been distributed, the German
command withdrew it decoy Social
isu and replaced them with "shock
troopi." Then it wa "Onward with
God and the drive started.
And in the actual fighting treachery
Kill played it part. Clever Bulgar
ian and Croats, speaking Italian an.:
dressed in Italian uniforms, had suc
ceeded fn penetrating the .Italian
line before the attack, and had as
sociated themselves with the Italian
troops. They succeeded in getting
hold of field telephones and phoning
orders for the abandonment of im
portant positions, thus adding grcatly
to the confusion and demoralization
of the Italian.
This is a fine example of the ort
of tactic that every nation assailed
by Germany has to expect, on the
battlefield, in diplomacy, in commerce
and in private life. It is another
warning to Americans to have no
faith in any professions made by
Germany or on Germany's behalf un
til Germany's military power is brok
en and the Hohenzollern rule of lies
and brutality is ended.
