"ENTICING" THE ENEMY
Another delightful tauhliaiim ha;
been added to the vocabulary oi v.at
Ami at usual, it is made in Germain.
It's the latest synonym lor retreat
It is always embarrassing to admit
retreat. All the belligerents have
hedged somewhat from telling tin
simple, uncamouflagcd truth on such
occasions, but the German general
staii and the German editors have
shown the greatest ingenuity and ver
satility. Early in the war the world
was made with "strategic retirements. '
"withdrawals to improved position-."
"taking up new positions on prepared
lines," etc., leading up to Marshal
von Hindcnhurg's verbal masterpiece,
"victorious retreat." But that im
mortal phrase has now been sur
passed. The Berlin Tageblatt. in a recent
issue, seeking to prepare its readers
lor a possible retreat of large pro
portions in northern France, sugnests
that the German high command may-
adopt the brilliant plan of "enticing
the enemy forward."
It may be. as one sarcastic Amen
can editor remarks, that this is wha
our friends the Italians have beeo
doing. But if so, they haven't said
anything about it. The expression is
reminiscent of the old story told b
the man who had received a victor
ious licking. "I threw .him violently
on top of me."
THE STUDENT OF TODAY
"The war hat brought a great
change in the type of men who are
attending the American colleges to
day." sirs a well known educator
"The old-fashioned college stndent
who used to be pictured as a freak
with gaudy clothes who cared for
nothing but football and social affairs
is no more. He has been replaced by
the serious thinking student w.ho re
gards it as a duty to take an interest
and be among the leaders in all im
portant public improvements."
The college president ciuoted makes
out a good case, too. His own insti
tution, which is a medium-sired uni
versity, has several hundred students
