Pauline Frederick who will be aeen in "Sapho", tonight at Globe theatre
PAULINE FREDERICK TONIGHT
IN DMIDEI'S "SAPHO"
In speaking of the .adaptation of
(Jaudtt'i internationally fatnoua tttiry
"Sapho," which he directed recently
for the Katuioua I'Uycrs, with beauti
ful Pauline Frederick m the title role,
Hugh Kord laid, "In treating the very
interesting story of 'Sapho,' we have
tried to show cause and effect it is
rot enough to know that Sapho led a
very picturesque life, we must knov
why she did so, and by glimpsing
her early life we soon ee the an-wer
to our question. Hefore she became
tainuut as Sapho, this girl was Ian
tiy I.cgrand, the daughter of a dis
reputable coachman, and a typical
flower-girl in the streets of Paris,
picking up odd bits of change in the
various cafes and restaurants while
her father squandered most of her
rarnings as well as his own, on drink.
I'neducated, with no refinement o!
taste and with only a beautifully
moulded face to differentiate licr from
the other flower girls, and only scenos
of strife and turmoil to look back
upon when entering the miserable
place that was home to her, it is
small wonder that she seized the first
opportunity to live more luxuriousl)
and failed to weigh the cost of her
ction.
"We cannot expect a girl who wa-
brought up in such an environment as
that to develop any gTcat refinement
of taste and as a matter of fact, Sapho
does not. It is only that she crave
luxury lo a greater and greater de
gree and it is this love of tlie beauti
ful and craving for amusement that
lead her farther and farther afield.
Never having been taught- 'right and
wrong.' she fails to realize that there
; of necessity a barrier between her
inri the height of her ambitions.
"What we have tried to do in this
production, is to catch the spirit o
the real Sapho of whom there are
thousands in real life and put it on
the screen. There are many discrep
ancies between this Itoty and the
oiiginal, but this was necessary in
order to avoid the over-realistic ef
fect of the unhappy ending. That
is why the 'Sapho' of the screen will
be a different one from the hook or
play, while at the same time, we hope
we have caught the spirit of this cel
ebrated French girl,
"Sapho" is the Paramount Picture
at the Globe Theatre tonight.
SEND IT PLEASE" COST
MERCHANTS $75,000,000
ANNUALLY
By George Martin, United Press Staff
Correspondent
Washington, August 13. W'herein
Miss Ida M. Tarbell lays the charge
(,f intellectual shiftlessness at the door
or the American housewife and points
out that it costs her merchant's $75,-
000,000 a vear to lug home her pack
ages for her:
"The greatest immediate war bene
fit of curing this Iazines in milady."
said Miss Tarhell today "will be tr
release IOC .000 able bodied delivery
clerks as fighting men at the front.1
Pausing just long enough to take
a hit of the sting out of her charge
by saying she believed all the Amer
ican housewife needs to cure her i:
the government's suggestion, Mis
Tarhell went on:
"The Commercial Economy Board
of the Council of National Defense
has discovered that the delivery of
the housewife's goods is one of the
most expensive luxuries we indulge.
"A world at war cnot tolerate
sloth, waste and indulgence.
'On a food bill of twelve and three
quarter million dollars, in 1916, Wash
ington housewives paid $SX.0fJ0 for
having the stuff sent home. Ice,
bread, milk and ice cream cost the
most.
"What is true of Washington is true
of ererv American ctty, town and vil
lage. The board estimates that the
gross delivery expense of retail gro
eery in the coutnry is $75,000,000 ;
year. What for? For the hire of men
to p"t up packages, run wagons an a
truck, pnt your things at your door,
not once, but often many times a day
Housewives visit the stores in cars.
carriages or on foot, but they never
think of carrying home anything
"The merchant is partly responsible
His willingness to serve her careless
and irregular habits of buying is one
way he builds up good will. The
women have come to feel that if they
carry bundles they will be classed as
undesirable customers.
Tn our great cities the cost to the
department store of delivering pack
ages is from 8 to 35 cents apiece. It
is not uncommon for the cost of de
livering an article to exceed the cost
of the article.
ANNAMITES SMALLEST
FIGHTERS IN WORLD WAR
By Henry Wood, United Press Staff
Correspondent
With the French Armies, July 15.
(By Mail) Annamite troops, "the
little, brown men," of France's colon
ies in Indo-China have just had their
baptism of Hre on the western front.
The Annamites are the smallest
men participating in the European
conflict, yet they have acquitted them
selves in the fighting in a manner that
gives them rank alongside with the
troops of greater physical endowment.
The Annamite battalions are com
posed entirely of volunteers. Their
first public appearance was on July
14. 1916, the French national holi
day, when along with the Russians,
Canadians, English, Belgian and Aus
tralian troops, tney participated in
the military parade at Paris.
Almost without exception they are
students from the French schools,
colleges and universities in Indo
China. The announcement there early in
1916, that volunteer battalions would
be formed for service in France, re
sulted almost in the depletion of the
French educational institutions. The
students enlisted almost to a man.
