the southern Methodist Episcopal
church shows that at best they can
make but a sorry case.
"The conscientious objector," says
the bishop, "has no claim upon a gov
ernment he disavow , upon a country
its laws, institutions, its lite and civ
ilization that he will. not defend."
This is quite logical. Our laws, in
stitutions, national tile and civilization
are based upon the work of men who
fought to establish and preserve them.
There would be no America if our
forefathers had been obsessed nh
"conscientious objections" against
fighting it they had not taken up arms
in defense of their civic rights. How,
then, can a man who objects to fight
ing for these things now when they
are threatened consistently remain
in enjoyment of tbetn? What right
has he to share in blessings won by
force of arms?
How can he avail himself of the
olice power that protects his person
and .property, of the courts that guar
antee him his "civic rights,"' of the
schools that educate his children, of
the libraries, museums, parks, etc.,
that minister to his needs, of the pub
lic sanitation that sefeguards his
health, of the use of public highways
and navigable streams, of the oppor
tunity to work, travel and enjoy him
self unmolested, of any of the innum
erable facilities provided him by vir
tue of his membership in a great, co
operative community which lives and
functions by reason of its ability and
willingness to defend itself?
If a "conscientious objector" it
really such, and not merely a coward
ly shirker, suggests Bishop Cooke, he
will abide by the natural consequenc
es of his convictions. He will be logi
cal and honest. And that would make
him literally "a man without a coun
try." For he would be morally oblig
ed to go and live alone in some des
ert island. Only then would he be
free from the charge of taking un
fair and immoral advantage of his
fellows.

There is a big ship building plant
directly opposite my hotel window, on
the other side ofthc Sound, and boats
for and from Seattle pass my window.
I am at the Hotel Tacoma, a fine
place nearly two hundred feet above
the water on the edge of the hill that'
forms the business section of the city.
As steamers run between Tacoma
and Seattle every two hours and the
tare is only 60c for the round trii
txepect to take a run over to Seat
tle some evening.
MARKET REPORT
The prices given in the local quo
tations are those asked by the
wholesaler from the retailer for
fruit and vegetables. All other
prices are those said the producer.

LOCAL
Its no more than right that our
soldiers and sailors should be allowed
to write home without stamping their
letters. And certainly Congress, wit1!
its notorious abuse of the franking
privilege for its own members, could
not hare the nerve to deny it to the
nation's defenders. All the letters
they write home will cost the postof
fice incomparably less than the politi
cal speeches the law-makers distrib
ute at public expense.
A patriotic housewife, weary of hav
ing male food conservationists urge
upon her a "meatless day," a wheat
less day,", etc., suggests that the men
themselves adopt a "smokeless day.
Which might not be a bad idea pro
viding the ladies would come across
with a "candy less day."
