HUMBLING THE PRUSSIANS
"We are pounding a sense of in
feriority into every pore of the Ger
man mind." aaid Lloyd-George in a
. ..,-, " lone as the Prus
sians have an idea of superiority in
their minds Europe will not be a

peace, i 1 wm ss s.w
The Prussian has many virtues, but a
sense of humility has never been
among them. The Prussian is now
being taught the virtue of humility
with a fierce ana reienticss iasu.
This is not a mere bombast. It is

that it sheds a bright light on the
fundamental fact of the war.
Tk- TtntUh nremier is a good
nsvrholocist to know that
the onlv important thing about a man
. - lm t V. - iw that man or
nation thinks. It is of no avail to
chastise people for wrong-doing
-1 i - - m;n .-h.T stisrd Pru

sianism as we know it is a disease ot
the Prussian soul which has appar
ently infected the soul of the Gers
man nation. It is the disease of sin
ful pride.
It shows itself as a haughty sense
of superiority to all the rest of man
kind. It is at the opposite pole from
the Christian virtue of humility. I, is
diametrically opposite to the self-obliterating
quality of mind that we ex
pect to find in a "gentleman." Ger
many has become the bully among
nations.
It is literally true that there will
be no living with Germany until
Germany learns humility. Unfortun
ately, it seems incapable, of the les
son except through bitter suffering.
So the task in which England and
her Allies have been engaged becomes
also out task. Jn accomplishing it
we shall- have to use the weapons
that Prajaaanism itself has forged.
We shaWhavc to apply hunger anil
fire and "sword.
It Is a tremendous undertaking, to
cast out that devil of Prussian pride.
But we have faith that we can do it.
And when the Prussian governing
class is reduced to a proper state of
humility, and thereby rendered inof
fensive to the just and lawabiding
portion of mankind that seeks noth
ing except through peaceful competi
tion, then Germany will be once more
a good neighbor as she was in olden
days.
The spirit of the German people
need not be broken in the process.
Only, they will be regardful of oth
ers' rights as well aa their own. nd
in the change of heart they may ac
quire an honest self-respect which
they could never feel while puffed
up with the dangerous and silly de
lusion of superiority to the rest of us
mortals.

TRENCH TALES
"I got it in both legs before
we reached the German lines,"
a youthful Australian was re
lating his experience at Vimy
Ridge, "But, Glory be to God,
I fell into a shell-hole and lay
down as snug as you please
in a clever place. I lay there
for hours and I heard a great
roarin' noise comin' near me.
I knew it was a tank and I
prayed it would not come near
me, me bein' hid in the shell
hole. But 1 beard it go roarin'
past quite near and then it got
stuck, and I could hear it fight
in' and strugglin' to get clear.
I never saw it.
"Later in the day, a lad I
knew came by. slightly wound
ed. 'Hullo, Peter," says he,
when he saw me in the hole.
'For God's sake have you a
water bottle with you?' says
I. 'Me legs is both broke and
I can't move to get a grip o'
mine.' He threw me down his
water bottle and it bein' full
of rum and water, it kept me
goin.' Then it began to rain,
and another lad, passin' by saw
me and threw me down a water-proof
sheet. Late at night
the stretcher-bearers got me.
So they were all Good Samari
tans the way they helped, them
that saw me lyin' by the wayside."
