ALFONSO FOR PRESIDENT
One of the stories coming out oi
the political confusion of Spain within
the last week ia to the effect that
King Alfonso ia willing to yield to
the establiahment of a republican form
of government, and would like to be
come the first president.
This look, on the face if it, very
much like a joke. Alfonso is a Bour
bon, one of the few remaining scions
of the oldest and proudest royal hous
es in Europe. The idea of any Bour
bon cheerfully surrendering his crown
is incredible. And the idea of his
continuing himself in power as pres
ident of the revolutionary govern
ment is undeniably funny. But it
isn't so absurd as it sounds.
Alfonso isn't an ordinary Bourbon.
He ia not to be measured, indeed, by
any of the rules and traditions wc
generally associate with royalty. A
sovereign of one of the most con
servative monarchies in the world,
and head of a court famed for its
tormality and reactionism, Alfonso
has shown himself a progressive and
a consistent breaker of rules His
sympathies are known to be with
the radicals rather than the reaction
aries. While the Spanish nobility and
veatcd interests in general have fav
ored Germany in the war, he has been
pro-Ally. "Only I and the rabble
are with the Allies," he once said with
a laugh.
The present ferment in Spain is un
intelligible to most outsiders. It
seems uncertain whether Spain will
awing to the German side or to the
side of the Allies, or neither, and
whether she will remain a monarchy
or follow her neighbor, Portugal's
example, and turn republican.
In the latter event, there might be
a chance of Alfonso realizing his re
puted ambition, though the possibil
ity is naturally remote. He's tre
mendously popular; but new-born re
publics distrust all royalty. Russia has
shown that in shelving Grand Duke
Nicholas.

DUELING POPULAR
IN ARGENTINE
Buenos Aia res, June 10. (by Mail)
(U. P.) Items like the following,
which appeared in the Buenos Aires
Herald recently, are seen frequently
in the Argentine press:
"In the 'quinta' (dooryard) of Dr.
Delcatse, a prominent lawyer, situat
ed in Bclgrano (a Buenos Aires su
burb), a duel with sabres was fought
yesterday between Senore Manuel
Rocca and Ezequiel B. Catbas before
several witnesses. Senor Rocca was
wounded slightly in the first assault,
when the duel was called off and the
antagonists became reconciled upon
the field of honor."
For hitting a man with your fist, if
blood is drawn, the minimum Argen
tine penalty is six months' imprison
ment without the option of a fine, but
the police never pay any attention to
duelists. Argentine duels, too, some
times result fatally.
