THE GERMAN RETREAT
Whether the German retreat on the
western front ii an indication of the
approaching military collapse of the
Central powers, or merely a piece of
stragegy skill fn II y carried out by the
; ommander of the Tuetonic army is
y no means certain in the minds of
those who have been close observers
of the opreationt Hi France.
The view which is held by the Bri
tish press is summed up in the follow'
ing despatch which was tent out with
the official approval of the British
war office:
"The German retirement, coming
so closely on the heels of the begin
ning of unrestricted submarine war,
forms one of the moat interesting
phases in the progress of the great
war. The Germans gave the intima
tion of the approach of their retire-
when they evacuated Grami-
' "This was evident of new German
tactics, for throughout all the bitter
fighting of 1916 they never yeilded an
inch of ground until they were driven
out a the point of the bayonet The
backward1 movement begun at Grand
court now becomes the greatest re
treat of this front since the battle of
the Marne."
Ia our judgement the above state
ment ia a fairly accurate analisia of
the military situation on the western
front"
There are those however who are
firmly convinced that in the war of
attrition which has been waged since
1914, Germany now shows her firat
material weakness and assert that the
retreat ia in fact the first genuine
sign of a speedy peace which has tbns
far been observed in the many sided
and complex military situation on the
other aide of the atlantjc

HOW MODERN SHIPS SINK.
uwaa Wheal Water Tight V
Are a Maaa t Ufa.
Nearly every class or design of V a sill
sinks la a particular way. For In
stance, the old type of single bottom
ateaiasr. with few or so bulkheads
that Is. la th modern sens of th
term almost invariably founders on
oaore or less of an even keel, which
means that It sinks level and not with
Its bow or stem ap in th air.
Thai I accounted for by th fact that
at whatever point th water may ca
ter It practically Bads Its own level, as
there are no subdivisions to obstruct It
Now. In tbe ease of a modern ves
sel, which la bollt with numerous sub
divisions. It Invariably happens that
ah founders with her bow or stern
high out of tbe water, or else sbe sinks
with n heavy list, or cant to one aid
or t he other. Th reason for this Is
that th bulkheads prevent the water
which enters th vessel from Boding
Its level Consequently when so par
ticular portion of the ship la foil of wa
ter, while th remainder Is practically
water tight, that part which is water
laden sinks first, owing to Its greater
weight
It as for this reason that such terri
ble loss of life frequently occurs Is
modern shipwrecks. Owing to the un
even sinking It la often found Impossi
ble to lower the majority of tbe Ufa
boats, aa they would fail lo reach th
water. London Answer.
