TRIBUTE TO CONGRESSMAN
A special day was taken in con
gress recently to pay the respects oi
the members for their departed fcl
low congressman, Samuel Tribhlc.
little known outside the halls ot con
gress. Here arc some of the expres
eions and verses that appeared in
different apeeches:
A good name is rather to be chosen
than great riches.
And loving favor rather than silvc:
or gold.
To thine own self be true.
And it must follow, as the night th
day. Thou canst not then be false to lag
man.
The heights by great men reached
and kept
Were not attained by sudden flight.
Bat they, while their companions
slept.
Were toiling upward in the night
He, the young, and strong, who cher
ished
NoMe longns for the strife.
By the roadside HI sill .er shed,
Wearv with the march of life.
To Ee in hearts we leave behin i
Is not to die.
Our Uvea are songs; God writes the
words.
And we set them to music at pleas
. rre:
The sonc grow ra.l, or sweet, or
glad.
As we choose to fashion the meas
ure. A quiet haven where his shattered
bark
Harbors secure 'til the rough storm
is cast.
Perhaps a passage overhung with
clouds.
But at its entrance a few leagues be
yond. Opening to kinder skies and milder
anas.
And seas pacific as the soul th.v
seeks them.
Heaven is not gained by a sudder
bound:
But we climb the ladder by which
we rise
From the lowly earth to the vaulted
skies
Round by round.
There will be a place we know not
. where.
And time we know not when,
When God Divine in justice there,
Will judge the deeds of men.
e
God does not send us strange flow
ers every year;
When the spring winds blow o'er
pleasant places.
The same dear things lift up the
same fair faces,
The violet is here.
It all comes back the odor, grace
and hue.
Each sweet relation of its life re
peated; It is the thing we knew.
So after the death winter it will be:
God will not put strange sights in
heavenly places;
The old love will look out from the
old faces;
Veilchen. I shall have thee!"
There is no death, .
The stars go down to rise upon a
fairer shore
And bright in Heaven's jeweled
ing and plans. Happy the mother
who has not driven her daughter a
way by speaking of the girlish notions
.is "silly" and "preposterous," or by
scolding the girl's delinquencies.
The bond between mother and
(laughter should never be broken.
The bond of companionship be
tween the two is a natural one. II
it binds them together the daughter's
problems become the mother s prob
lems, and the solution will be a wise
one.
"A son is a son 'till he gets a wife:
a daughter is a daughter all the. days
of her life" if the bond holds true.
The old adage says: "A boy's best
friend is his mother." That is true.
But a mother is in a peculiar sense
the best friend of a daughter. And
the girt who forgets this is in danger
of making a mistake in life.
Ask your mother.

shine forevermore.
And ever near us tho' unseen
The nearer immortal spirit treads.
For all the boundless universe is life.
There are no dead.
ASK MOTHER
When in donbt consult your mother
advises the Palatha (it.) News in
The Editorial. That advice applies
to children, generally, hot it applies
especially to girls. Your mother,
young woman, has had the advant
age of experience which yon lack.
She knows the. ways of the world,
which yon do not know. Yon see
things from yonr point of view. It
is neccessarily a narrow point of
view. Year mother knows. She has
gone by the way yon are coming.
Happy that mother who won and
kept her daughter's confidences, who
knows how important it is to listen
sympathetically to her daughter's do-
ISRTS
The pavement was covered with
worms Sunday morning, driven out
of the ground by a heavy rain, seek
ing refuge on the hard surface, only
to be slaughtered by automobiles and
the beat of -he day.
How much like the great European
war with men driven into the dirt
of the trenches, only to be mashed
by the juggernaut of modem war's
hellish impliments of destruction.
Speaking of war, if you wish to
keep your mind in an agrccablv shape
lon t read the details of trench life.
It's enough to make the grey matter
black. Sufficient to cover the face
with clouds.
That's one thing our friend George
Forgey couldn't laugh over.
Down at Portland for fortv-five
years Gottfried Keller has been sit
ting on mill stones cutting, cutting,
cutting, like Sysiphus ever rolling the
stone up the mountain, over and
over again.
He says he likes it bes: o' all thin
and sings at his work.
After all most lives are merely a
repetition. We get up. eat, work,
study, perhaps plav a little or ,
amused, and go to bed
Things run in a circle, and again
and again the ends come together.
This "old nut" has about made up
his mind that it pays best to follow
the system of Kelier and smile as
much as possible, and not wonv over
the monotony of life, for that's human
experience.
Complaining and fault finding are
mighty poor mixtures for mending
things.
N'o two people do ti ings alike, all
different, and it is well to remember
this when putting on the critic's cap
To change the subject, a good rule
in life is to leave the old fashioned
skunk alone.
It is interesting to know though
that the up-to-date skunk i a harm
less fellow, and makes a pretty good
pet. a rather pretty animal.
Dr. I.atourette and Dr Eaton are
to he married in Portland. Can anv
ane guess which is the bride?
Give the prodigal girl iust as much
of a chance as the prodigal son.
It is better to lift than to knock

Outside distractions are not nearly so tempting as the

Cheerful surroundings after nightfall are impossible with

No One Likes
to spend evenings in a dark gloomy household. Life

Many a home has been made happy by spending two or
