SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGHTS
Mentioning the European war Sa
turday nights in these thoughts has
become a wearisome matter, and c
certainly hope to see the time come
when it can be stopped; but we either
have to do sn or stop these thoughts,
and it is not an easy thing to decide
what is the least of two evils.
Peace talk continues to be merely
talk, with a jellyfish vertebrae. It
hasn't enough backbone to stand
alone yet. Like a dishrag it simply
flops around, spattering things up.
And it will be that way for some
rime: but lillies grow in slime, and
some day out of this awful mud will
come a flower, and from among the
buzzards of Europe, will fly out a
dove: and there will be peace, and
may it be the end of the war. It
probably won't be; but we would be
depraved to wish for anything else.
In this country the big question has
been one of leakage of news in refer
ence to the issuing of a note by the
President to the European powers
suggesting that it is time for peace,
something that caused a few fortunes
to be made by Wall Street gamblers.
The whole affair simply speaks for
the peanut politics of the age. The ef
fort is one merely to throvr mud. When
is one merely to throw mnd. When
the election ended it was hoped that
mnd throwing had stopped: but some
ornery congressmen, with paws in
their brains, thought it an opportun
ity to make a hit, and so launched out
into the abyss of darkness, and al
ready are stranded, covered with
slime.
When Davy Crocker said: "Be sure
you are irght and then go ahead," he
knew what he was saying.
Again the country has been afflict
ed with Harry Thaw, who for several
years has been almost constantly in
the limelight in different forms. Kill
ing a man, perhaps justified in doing
so. he fought insanity charges for
years, finally winning out, only to fol
low a few months' obscurity by an
act of depravity that makes it plain
that his mind is unbalanced, and that
the ma nis non compos mentis. The
public will be glad to sec the follow
ing words in connection with the
Thaw story: THE END.
A long time friend of the Misfit
Man died at Corvallis this week, and
a ray of sunshine went out of the
world. The man was one whom to
meet meant a pleasant experience, for
he was always genial, and just as
much so to the laboring man as to
the man of wealth. He had a good
word, did "Jimmy" Nolan, for all,
and always cast about him a spirit of
optimism that was farrcaching.
The best time in the world to throw
bouquets is during a man's life, and
there ought to be expression of ap
preciation among all of us while we
are in a condition to understand and
appreciate: but if that is past then let
us l?ow our last respect with many
flowers and with every dollar spent
ivc another for the poor.

A Physicianless Town
Eugene Guard;
Ray Goodrich, vice-president of the
First National bank of Eugene, ac
companied by his wife, left for Roch
ester, Minn., on the 1:50 train this
hfternoon. While in fairly good
health. Mr. Goodrich things it advis
able to consult a physician.
Too Much Work Already
An Indiana preacher startled his
flock the other day with a most ex
traordinary announcement. The con
gregation had thought to please and
surprise him by raising his salary
from $700 to $800, and when they
hrought the joyful news to the preach
er, he said: "My dear brethren I can
not accept it I have all I can do to
collect the $700." Preston, (la.)

Rev. J. H. Talbot, an M. E. minis
ter, offered the opening prayer for the
senate one morning. After six min
utes the sergeant at arms pulled his

gone far enough to suit these fellows.
Better call a halt." He halted.
Most public prayers are too long
Few of them are petitions to God,
merely talks to the audience, covcrinc
everything under the sun, and telling
God numerous things he. never knew
before.
A business man confines his busi
ness to one thing at a time: but the
minister seems to think it is his duty
to pray for everything thinkahlr
making his prayer of no value at all.
