WE NEED NERVE
Secretary of Commerce Redfield
says:
We long ago endured the business
hock the war brought with it. For
many months we hare been passing
through a period of stimulation brought
by the war. This seems to be clos
ing, and we are apparently about
to enter upon the inevitable time of
readjustment to a peace basis.
The prospect of peace seems to
bring with it only fear to many in the
business world. We are doing well
now, say they, but what is to happen?
Since it is not known precisely what
is to happen, ghosts arc conjured up
and given form and power, and men
worry over the terrible possibilities
from these creatures of their own
creation. What is wanted is not so
much nervea as nerve, not fear, but
foresight, not cowardice, but courage.
Least among all the peoples of the
world have we cause tor dread "Our
withers are unwrung": crar coffers Ve
full; our sons survive. There will
be readjustments, possibly different
ones, but never was nation in such
shape to face them fearlessly as are
we today. If the problems prove dif
ficu t. the greater need for sanity of
mind and cleaness of thought about
them. They are not to be dealt with
better, but worse, if we are afraid
of them One need not be heedless
because he is calm. A quiet mind is
not an indication of weakness or ig
norance. Worry and fear will not
make the facts better, but merely
weaken our power to deal with them.
How we shall deal with them depends
chiefly on ourselves. Have we used
the monts of prosperity well ? Are
our debts paid? Js depreciation
marked off? Are fixed assets marked
down to rea values? Has the time
of prosperity been utilized to a;et rid
of old equipment? Are we as cer
tain of the fact that our methods are
good as wc arc that they will need
to be good? De we clearly understand
what it costs ns to make goods and
to do business? Have we clear know
ledge of our overhead charges and
of how to deal with them? Have wc
used the days of sunshine to prepare
for the time when it may rain? If
we have done so we may approach
the contest like a trained athlete, fear
leu of dificulties, counting them foe
worthy of the steel.

plicity. He merely pointed out that
the war imperils the interests of neu
tral countries and ask the nations
to define the conditions on which
they would consent peace.
It is not difficult for anyone o
understand such a request. There :s
no reason why partisans on either
side should take offense, for ihr t
was neither pro-ally nor pro-Ccr nan.
Then why should there be an.- jura
tion as to the senate's view of lh"

grow so vehement and denounce 'i

note? Why should not all ambassa
dors express such approval, is peace
not a worthy end?
Is the whole world so insane t'th
war that the voice of reason can no
longer be heard?
The present attack on the prcsi-
dent will react with such iorce as to
make some of the hammer wicldcis
look like jellyfish.
