MAKING TIMES PROSPEROUS.
' Prosperity to a considerable degree
rests upon the whims of the business
interests of the country and upon the
people themselves.
If they are optimistic -and believe in
prosperity and work faithfully to that
end, prosperity will be with us, re
gardless of conditions in other coun
tries. We are a self-supporting people
and are not dependent upon the
whims or exertions of others.
. But if we become pessimistic, and
constantly predict disaster and force
burselves to the belief that it is to
tome, then we are likely to get no
snore than thai which we predict
i ,A few people through the constant
use of their tongues can in time in
still into the minds of others the
same atmosphere of gloom that per
vades them, and this is spread to oth
ers, and yet others, until communi
ties and states and whole nations suf
fer from the effect.
But prosperity can be made, if we
, want it It will come, if we seek it
It will remain, if we nurse it
We should talk prosperity, feel
prosperity and act prosperity if we
would have prosperity, for in no oth
er way will we meet up with the fa
vors of the gods.
It is up to you, to every citizen, to
work for prosperity in this communi
ty, for it is an almost universal rule
of man that -we receive in proportion
as we do. Baker Pemoerat. ''
AUDIENCE SPELLBOUND '
Rev. Eli J. Forsythe, an evangelist
preaching in Milwaukee, Wis., recent
ly, took as his subject "the modern
dance." The report of, his discourse
says he lambasted the modern dance
in so forceful a manner that women
in the congregation held their fing
ers in their ears to avoid hearing him.
He so vividly described what is his
opinion of the emotions of the danc
ers that many men as well as women
refuted to stay through the sermon.
Among other things he said the mod
ern dance was so degrading that "no
feirl could leave a dance hall with the
same degree of modesty as befors she
entered it." Many tried to escape the
chu'eh but frtnd the doors Icr.kei
and guarded by u:hers and ent.evie?
Vt be permitted to leave were un
availing. Only a tr.reat to have a '"C
department enforce the regulat:oni at
last opened the way for escape. This
Is something entirely new in the way
of "holding an audience spellbound."

TOO MUCH MONEY.'
The December Woman's Home
Companion has an article in which
this passage occurs:
"The nuisance for the man who has
acquired great financial resources
usually is that he doesn't know what
he wants. Possessing the resources
and feeling the moral necessity t
recourse to them, he looks about for
'something to want and he selects
the most costly thing. The acquisition
"of this most costly thing always in
volves, in practice, the separation of
the rich man from society. Thus, he
will asquire a large estate, or several
large estates, and cait himself off
from the world by gates, doors, miles
of drive, lodge keepers, menials, and
secretaries. Or he will acquire a two-
'thousand-ton yacht and cross the At
lantic privately, though less quickly,
less comfortably, and even less pri
vately than on a great liner. Or he
will keep a private orchestra, instead
of being teen at concerts. All which,
though magnificent, is anti-social and
silly, and is secretly felt to be so by
the rich man when he happens to
wake up in the middle of the night
and can't go to sleep again.'
