Y4o two ALBANY BA1LV DEMOCRAT, FftlDAV, NOVEMBER 10, 1018. ' Daily Democrat F. P.NUTTINQ Batesae at tha poetoffice it Albany, Ovecmassecond-clasa matter. FRIDAY.. NOVEMBER 10,1916. WOODROW WILSON 1 The re-election of Woodrow Wil ton it great victory for the people of the United Statei and a blow at Wall street methods and special priv ileges. He deserves the honor, and is es pecially needed at this time, in the midst of a' great crisis, for he has shown that he can be trusted. The great work he has begun has not been completed, and he it needed to fin ish it One of the three greatest of Ameri can presidents, his-st.itesmanship is of a high order, backed by a clean per sonal life. ' In the emergencies of a wonderful era, fraught with danger on every side, this country is fortunate in hav - ing President Wilson at the helm. DUNN OPTIMISTIC Don: Neither the pending elec tions, nor the persistent rise of prices have perceptibly reduced the moment um of the business movement Ac tivity continues unabated at a time when more or less hesitancy is usual ly witnessed, and it remains a wonder that with costs mounting steadily, and in many cases rapidly, demands are sustained in such great volume. New buying for current and forward re quirements stilt outstrips the facilities for both production and distribution, labor conditions and the growing scar city of materials acting as a brake on manufacturing in many directions. Car shortages are also a hindrance and the consequent restriction of fuel supplies causese some concern among indus trial interests. With shipments gen erally backward and the 'trend of prices ; continuing strongly upward, producers display greater reluctance in eztendng commitments farther in to the future and an increasing num ber of profitable contracts are being rejected. Yet, even with much busi ness of necessity held in abeyance, bank clearinks make a phenomenal . exhibit and are 39.0 per cent larger this week at leading centers outside New Ybrk than a year ago, though part of the grain is obviously due to the high prices. As many expected, a farther striking rise has occurred in iron, fuel, hides, leather and in other important lines, and of the 331 whole- tale commodity quotations regularly compiled by Dun's Review, 86 show advance this week and 14 declines. The extreme living costs not unnat urally cause some restriction of buy ing and, by many, luxuries are pur cahsed sparingly, yet, on the whole, consumption is maintained in remark able volume and in the aggregate re tail trade is of record dimensions, though the weather has not been fa vorable to the best results in some sections. It it significant of the times that the failure record continues highly encouraging. Prosperity in trade and . industry makes for greater prompt fless in the settlement of financial ob ligations and business reverses are ,- relatively moderate, in spite of the increase in new: enterprises. During October there were 86 more strictly commercial defaults than in the short er month of September, 1,240 against 1,154, but fewer insolvencies occurred than in any October since 1912, and it is necessary to go back month by month to May, 1910, to find an in debtedness smaller, than the $10,800, 000 just reported. Compared with last year, the numerical reduction is 3S9 and the contraction in amount about $15,000,000, or nearly 60 per cent in the latter case. An interesting feature of the present returns is the small number of large suspensions, there being only 13 for $100,000 or more, involving less than $2,300,000 alto gether. This it the best exhibit for October in over a decade. , . Extravagant predictions of the Steel Corporation's earnings were not real ized, though another new high rec ord was established. The total for the third quarter, $85,800,000 net, was well below the highest estimate, but was $4700,000 larger than in the three preceding months and $25,000,000 greater than in the first quarter. Each month of the nine, excepting July, showed a progressive rise in revenue, and the July decrease, $2,500,000, was apparently due mainly to adverse working conditions. It was more than made up in August, while the Sep tember figures were wholly unpre cedented at over $30,400,000, or half at much as the total for the entire ' first quarter. Comparisons with other years have lost interest, but it is sig nificant, as illustrating the remark able prosperity of the steel industry, that the earnings for the quarter re cently ended were not far from dou ble those of the second quarter of 1907 the high point prior to the out break of the war. 1 r w .. t. e -, - - 1SHTS Yesterday's scientific misfits were so readable we give another dose of them during this close nerve racking contest on president Leather waste is an important in gredient of much of the best 'wall pa per.
