TURNING TO WILSON.
With prominent Boston Republi
cans organizing a Woodrow Wilson
Campaign club to work for the Pres
ident's reelection, and with Arthur
Slcsinger, another Progressive lead
er of Brooklyn, anrouncing that he
will take the stump for Wilson, the
tint of Independent votes is rolling
steadily upon Democracy's shores.
Every day brings further proof that
the drift toward Wilson is going to
be complete. Many of the Indcpend-
ents who had waiteJ hopefully upon
the sounding of Mr. Hughes' keynote
are at last Staking acknowledgement
n' their keen disappointment. Some of
them arc content to pledge their sup
port to President Wilson. Other gc
one point further and bitterly assail
the policy of the Republican party.
In coming out for the Democratic
ticket Mr. Slesinger,x of Brooklyn,
characterized the campaign utteranc
es of Charles E. Hughes as "what
could be heard from any old woman
over any back fence." Continuing he
said:
"I am an ex-Republican, but was
always a radical Progressive within
that party. When the Bull Moose par
ty was formed I joined it, not because
of Colonel Roosevelt's revolt, but be
cause of the principles in its platform.
I am a platform Bull Moose, not a
X. R. Bull Moose, and I refuse to be
delivered by that gentleman just to
help put back the Republican party in
power.
"I fail to see how the Hemenways,
the Barneses, the Pcnroses and the
pussyfoot Cranes have in any way
purged themselves of the charges of
Colonel Roosevelt made against them,
and I refuse to be delivered over to
Mr. Hughes just to rehabilitate Jhat
corrupt plunderbund.
"Mr. Hughes :n all of his speeches
has not advanced any propositions
for the general betterment of the
country, and what he has said so far
1 could hear any day in any week
from any old woman over any back
fence I happened to be near.
- "While I am rot a sympathizer with
the Democratic party generally, I be
lieve that Mr. Wilson has done more
during h!s tenure of office to promote
advanced political measures for the
, benefit of the people generally than
any president since Abraham Lincoln,
and I shall therefore support him to
.the utmost of my endeavors and as
soon as convenient I will take the
stump in his bc-ialf."
MUCH MONEY.
Eugene Guard: If money' means
anything the United States will soon
be more than two-and-a-half times as
well "prepared" as it was last year.
Last year .he army appropriation was
5101,974,195.87; this year it is $267,-
596.530.10. Last year the navy cost
$149,661,86488; this year $.116,726.
556.54 was appropriated for it. Last
year coast defenses cost 06.006,216
.90; this year the cost will be $25,742,
550. The total excesses of this year's
, warlike appropriation over last year's
was $352,374,373. No wonder Sen
ator "Tom" Taggart of Indiana was
moved to point with pride to this
record, because, as he said, the army
and navy "will cost this year much
larger sums than last year." The mon
ey value of the preparedness 'agita
tion .if we venture to put it that way,
con be measured down to the last
eighty-eight cents. The defense socie
ties, navy leagues, and so forth, can
check tip their work on an adding
machine.
There may also have been an ad
vance in Americanism whatever that
ia. If so, it has not yet been reduced
to dollars and cents, and, perhaps,
even Senator Taggart could not do
that with it. And we may well doubt
if there has been three hundred mil
lion dollars worth of moral advance,
or ten cents worth, from this Ircmcn-.
dous agitation. The nation has not
once been allowed to forget its pre
cious bank accounts. Whether all this
preparedness was needed or not as-
sume, to clear the argument, that ev
ery cent's worth of it actually was
needed the agitation for it hai not
contributed one noble new ideal. It
lias hecn characteristically sordid
from start to finish. We are not ob
viously any ncacr to moral prepar
edness than we were two and a half
year ago.
MISFITS
This is not an advertisement for
the painters; but is a fact neverthe
less: Prosperity and paint go together.
Few things indicate prosperity
more than plenty of paint, and a
lack of it the opposite.
People who go into a city well
painted always leave with a better im
pression of it
A peculiar condition exists down
along the border. There are seven or
eight cities right on the border cov
ering both sides, with one name on
this side and one on the Mexican
side. Some have merely ail imaginary
division' line, others the Rio Grande.
The biggest ones are El Paso, on the
U. S. side and Juarez on the other
side. Then there are the American cit
ies of Douglas, Presidio, Eagle Pass,
Brownsville, Laredo, Xaco and No-
gales.
Poor Roumania has at last been
swept into the vortex amidst the ca
vorting of the devil and his votaci,cs.
Greece is sputtering and is about
the same as in the fight.
Several other of the neutrals have
been spit on numerously; but are
staying out any way.
Was Cold at Medford.
Medford Sun:. There was a wild
and erratic notion circulating among
the natives Friday that it was hot.
and the allegation was somewhat sus
tained by the mercury, which thought
it registered 106 degrees. Any num
ber of citizens labored under the ap
prehension that they were sweating.
But, according to a couple of fugitives
from Kansas and a deserter from Da
kota, it was just a nice balmy day
Like as not right now, they are flat
on their backs from a sudden attack
of chilblains, expecting to discover
signs of frost bite on the ear next the
sun. Something should be done to
keep inflammatory ideas from cap
turing the public mind. To say that
it was hot Friday was preposterous,
and knocking the valley, besides IT
WAS NOT HOT.

day. The presidential candidate did
not have milch to say to the crowd
who awaited him. He seemed very de
sirous of shaking hands with every
one, while Mrs. Hughes delightedly
tossed the babies into the cool air and
smiled to the delighted parents who
had faced the storm to give their off
spring this opportunity. They seemed
to be a comfortable looking couple of
middle age. who may tie happier if
they do not reach the goal of their
aspirations than they would if they
did.
