PROGRESSIVES FOR' WILSON.
- On the letter-head of Richards &
Richard, attorneys, of Portland, Ore.,
' went the following, dated Tulv 8th: .
"Dear President Wilson: I trust
ithat you will pardon me for these
few lines. Four years ago I w.t -i
delegate to the Republican National
Convention at Chicago from ths stu;
of Washington and went out and be
came a Progressive; and as we had
no leader we accepted the leadership
of one Theodore Roosevelt, who has
since proven to have been unworthy
to have led such a magnificent host.
I later ran for congress as a Pro
gressive but was defeated in the black
belt of Washington where the big
timber barons flourish.
"I was rather glad when you were
elected for I deemed you the best
man for the plac: and wanted more
to beat the old republican gang than
anything else
"Now what do ".ve see? This same
olil gang behind Hughes for presi
dent. And what will the Progressives
d..? Why abutit nine-tenths wiL vote
for you, .Vr. WM.-on, The . political
Progressives who were simply pie
hunters will try to crawl back with
the old gang, but the rank and tile
will vote for you, Mr. Wilson. J pre
dict that you riil carry nearly every
state "n. the Unir.o juit as you did
before and that you will win by a
c'.ear mrjority .if ever a million voto,
for the people are with you.
"For various reasons my people r
that is my immediate' family who
have been about a third Republican, a
third Progressive and third Demo
crat are all registered in Oregon as
Republicans, and every one. of them
without exception will vote for Wod
row Wilson for president. And I find
among the common people a ten
dency in the same direction. There is
an awful surprise awaiting the old
l:ne politicians of the Republican par
ty. I am well acquainted with the
drift of affairs on tin' scoast, and will
say that you will carry the three Pa
cific Coast states, California, Oregon
and Washington, without a doubt.
You may thing I am a bit enthused
but, Mr. President, you will be sur
prised this fall when you hear from
this coast -,
We do not vote for you expecting
any private gain, but vote for you be
cause we deem you the one safe and
honest man in this republic for whom
we have a chance to vote,, and that
you will do your best for the welfare
of us all and of our country.

BRYAN AND WILSON.
Mr. Bryan will begin a speaking
tour in behalf of President Wilson
about September 15. Having been
quite emphatic in speaking against
the president when he resigned from
the cabinet some time back, the sil
ver tongued orator will now know
just what it is like to be on both sides
of the fence. Eugene Register.
All of which is untrue, except the
coming speeches. Mr. Bryan did not
speak against the president after he
resigned. On the contrary he spoke in
high terms of the president and his
accomplishments. In his paper not a
word can be iound against Wilson.
They differed only in the matter of
preparedness and methods for retain
ing peace for our country.
MRS. HUGHES' INTERVIEW.
A lady reporter for one of the re
publican papers there interviewed
her report, leaving out the real facts
in the report, but which she told pri
vately as follows:
"She was the hardest woman to get
to say anything that I ever talked to.
Every time I asked her what she
thought about anything she said: 'I
think just as my husband does.' After
I'd been with her a couple of hours
the got off her guard, however, and
began talking about woman suffrage.
" 'After traveling through the .west
ern states,' she said, 'where woman
suffrage seems to be such a success,
t am beginning 16 ehanga my mind
about tt.'
"Oh," I exclaimed, "then you really
have not been in favor of It f
"Mrs. Hughes nearly fell out of the
automobile. 'Oh, what have I said,"
she cried. "I'm afraid I've said some
thing 1 shouldn't. You mustn't quote
me 1 really haven't thought about
votes for women at all.'
"And that was the way it was all
the time she either wouldn't say any
thing at all, cr when she did say
something she said I mustn't quote
her." '
MISFITS
A letter came to the post office at
Corvallis addressed lw7-15-16 to9-7-16.
Corvallis, Or., and it reached the
right place. The futures were at the
bottom of an advertisement in the G.
T. showing how loii it was to run.
and the answer was to the advertise
ment. Gee, it transpires that S. Benson,
for whom there was a big celebration
sometime ago honoring him as Ore
gon's first citizen, wasn't a citizen at
all, he having been naturalized since.
It will be "somewhat of a whiskers
affair when J. Ham Lewis comes out
this way in the tracks of Hughes.
A tremendous effort has been made
ti stave the big strike off until after
the wedding at Marshfield today.
Mrs. Hughes says that she thinks
just as her husband does. Oh, dear
me!
Privately she has'been against wo

votes.
