WHAT A DOLLAR DOES. v,
i The following from the Implement
and Vehicle Record, given the Dem
ocrat by an Albany man, is a good il
lustration of what a dollar will do:
"I am a Dollar! A little ageworn,
perhaps, but still in circulation. I am
proud of myself for being in circula
tion. I am no tomato-can dollar not
I. This town is only my adopted
borne, but .1 like it and hope to re
main permanently. When 1 came out
of the mint I was adopted into a town
like this in another state. But, after a
time, 1 was sent off to a big city,
many miles away. I turned up in a
mail-order house. For several years 1
stayed in . that city. Millionaires
boueht ciifars with me. I didn't like
that, for 1 believe in the plain people.
Finally a traveling man brought me
to this town and left me here. I was
so glad to get back to a smaller town
that 1 was determined to make a des
perate effort to stay. One day a citi
aen of this town was about to send
me back to that big city. I caught hiin
looking over a mail-order catalog.
Suddenly I found my voice and said
to him: 'Look here, if you'll let me
stay in this town I'll circulate around
and do you a lot of good. You buy a
big beefsteak with me, and the butch
er will buy groceries, and the grocer
will buy hardware, and the hardware
man will pay his doctor bill with me,
and the doctor will spend me with a
farmer for oats to feed his horse with,
and the farmer will buy some fresh
meat from the butcher, who will come
' around to the dentist to get his tooth
mended. In the long run, as you see.
I'll be more useful to you here at
home than if you send be away for
ever.' "The man said it was a mighty stiff
argument. He hadn't looked at it in
that light before, so he went and
bought the beefsteak, and I began to
circulate around home again. Now.
just suppose all the other dollars that
are sent to Chicago or some other bit!
city were kept circulating right here
at home, you could see the town
grow. Honest, ain't I right?"

INDEPENDENT'S CHOICE.
"I have in my voting career cast by
ballot for Cleveland. McKinley, Bry
an and Roosevelt, and therefore can
claim some degree of independence,"
said C. W. Alcott, 'why an independ
ent should prefer Wilson to Hughes
' that I am afraid your space would all
be taken up in the enumeration. I
will therefore give but three all suf
ficient reasons for the faith within
" me.
"First the president is absolutely
Jioneit and conscientious in nil bis
undertakings, and his high ideals and
moral purposed both at home and
abroad have spread their influence for
good throughout the nation. ;
Second, many great achievements
for the benefit of mankind when
thrown into the scales against his mis
takes of judgment so far outweigh
. the errors that the balance in favor of
. the good that he has done can not
be estimated.
"Third, Mr. Hughes has nothing to
offer that we as a nation we not al
readv in possession of."
The man who is not contented
Albany after all the splendid remarks
made about the place at Chautauqua
speakers and the jewelers at the re
cent convention, must be made of dis
content microbes. , .
Evidently a lot of city ordinances
that are out of practice. ,
A paper down in Southern Or. says

Wilson has done. A regular Hearst
sheet then.
The masses are back of the presi
dent in the things he has done, and
will continue to be.
