A GOOD SELECTION.
Baltimore American: In the selec-
'tion of United States district judge at
Cleveland, John H. Clarke, as suc
cessor to late Justice Charles E.
Hughes, now the republican candi
date for the presidency of the United
States, President Wilson has display-
- ed a faculty of discrimination and se
lection that is worthy of commenda
tion. No question of the political char
acter of the nominee need be consid
ered, as the supreme bench is above
"politics. nd it may be assumed that
the man who has been designated has
been carefully selected upon the
ground of eminent fitness. A lawyer
of prominence and success and the
possessor of a mind of superior qual
ity, he will come to the bench with
the endowments that arc needed for
the determination of the class of
questions that pass under the view of
the supreme judiciary.
If political honors are to be consid
ered, the nomination of Judge Clarke
. may possibly be credited to the in
fluence of the secretary of war, who
is sponser for him.
GOOD SOLDIERS.
The Democrat recently gave what
a writer considered a good sol
dier. Here is something entirely dif
ferent from the pen of W. J. Bryan:
The good soldier is the soldier, who
is ready to perform any duty assigned
to him. To be a good soldier one need
not be bloodthirsty,' he need not be
anxious to kill someone or be killed.'
It is no more necessary that the sol
dier should be anxious to fight than
that the fireman should be eager for
a fire. It is sufficient that soldier and
' fireman be ready to make any sacri
fice required. , '
' It is no reflection on the courage
and loyalty of the fireman that the
people who employ him try to prevent
fires by encouraging the erection of
fireproof buildings no fireman feels
offended if people prefer a hotel of
steel and concrete to a firetrap struc
ture. Neither is it a reflection on the
patriotism of the soldier to try to
avoid war. Peace treaties are intend
r ed to prevent war as fireproof build
ings are intended to prevent fire.
One cannot appreciate the service ren
dered by both fireman and soldier
without, desiring either a fire or a
fight
PEACE PROSPECTS SLIM.
Recent statements made by Dr.
Aked, of San "Francisco, who has re
turned from Europe, leaves little
doubt that the war - will last a long
dime. He says that from full oppor
tunity to study conditions in Germany
and to have the views of German of
ficials, there are no peace signs in the
realm of the kaiser. He says that the
North Sea fight stiffened at once the
' sentiment in Germany for the prose
cution of the war until such time as
the allies are ready to make, peace
upon the basis of the war map and
without regard for questions bearing
upon responsibility for the outbreak
of the war. He did not see any signs
of paucity of funds or of men for the
carrying on of the warfare.

A Baltimore doctor gives the fol
lowing summer advice:
"Don't expose yourself to the hot
rays of the sun.
"Don't take ice cold drinks.
"Don't take stimulants during the
extremely warm weather.
.". "Don't overtax yourself, either men
tally or physically. -"Don't
overload the stomach. Eat
- sparingly and eat slowly, and be sure
that you thoroughly masticate your
food.
"Don't bathe on a full stomach.
"Don't sleep in a draft. -
"Don't look at thermometers.
, "Don't worry.
"Don't remain up Ieta at night. Get
plenty of sleep and rest, for these
. things are essential. The body needs
both to help in the work of recupera-
- tion from the wear and tear of the
business day.

all for Hughes for president, the Wall
street candidate.
A rich woman's club was recently
organized in X ' Y. to promote
Hughes election.
But the common every day people
are for Wilson, a man of the people.
They're so honest in old Benton

That scarcely any die.
They'd rather live in Benton,
Than the home beyond the sky.
I could talk on, yes, for hours,

Well, we live down where we do
because it just suits we'uns. Here we
have the good and the bad, sunshine
and clouds, in fact are very human;
but we are the Hub, and that is good;
we fly on our own wings, not the
state's, and our people are just about
the best in the world; but we have
sense enough to know that there's no
heaven this side of death, as good as
things are in Linn.
The Kaiser sends a message to his
men to trust in God. Well, if the peo
ple of Europe had really trusted in
God there wouldn't be any war. The
devil and his human emissaries have
been at the bottom of the whole cus
sedness. A camel asked the Arab in the tent
for the privilege of sticking his head
into the tent out of the cold. The next
morning the camel occupied the whole
tent and the man wr.s out in the c Id.
An Albany man tells this in the Tele
gram, with .the remark "that this is
the way it will be in Oregon if the
flew brewers' bill should pass.
