SATURDAY NIGHT THOUGHTS.
If it is possible to watch the Euro
pean war from an impassioned stand
point, without thinking of the miser
and sorrow entailed, one can see a
great game being played, with exist
ence for the reward of victory. Skilled
men are making the plays, knowing
the board, almost seeing into the
minds of their adversaries, acute with
the responsibility, keen for an oppor
tunity to make a checkmate play. As
such it is intensely interesting, but
alas, we can't keep our minds off the
'deviltry of it, the hellishr.ess of the
whole business.
The end of this week sees the gains
decidedly on the side of the allies,
who have taken the offensive and arc
smashing things on both sides of the
field, the Russians on the east, the
French and English on the west. It
has settled down to a fight -between
the Russians and Austrians on one
side, aided by the Germans, and the
' French and British on the other
against the Germans. Others engaged
have almost lost their identity in the
fierce jnaelstroni, almost wiped off the
map. A small country stands no show
in such a whirlpool. ...
Our own trouble, that with Mexico,
is being judiciously settled by the
greatest diplomat of the age, and the
present indication is that we wilt not
have war, something sincerely wished
by the masses, though not by the yel
low "He. Got Us Into War" sheets
and landed and oiled interests. Se
curing peace for a country these
blood-thirsty days is a greater
achievement than thrusting" a nation
into war. .
The common people of the world
are for peace, and. for those things
that operate for peace. '. - '
i A man passing through the city,
was arrested and fined for having a
revolver on his person. He was serv
ed right. . Those who came in contact
with him were not safe in his pres
ence. This has been found to be hu
man experience. He may be cool
healed and carry the revolver just for
safety,' but take a crowd of men, all
.-with revolvers, and it is like bcinj in
a powder magazine.
A political campaign would not be
a bad thing for the country if it were
run along decent lines; but as con
ducted, with only the result in view,
with no censorship on methods, it
creates a sentiment of distrust in ev
erything, whose influence is evil. If
the game It to make people think the
country will go. to the bow-wows if
the other fellow is elected, there is
bound to be depression in business.
. and that's why presidential years are
that way.

age, in taking a trip had her ticket

she had taken her hat off, showing
her gray hair, the conductor looked at

Five hundred saloons in New York
City and 100 in Brooklyn were crowd
ed out of business last year by mo
lion picture theatres, according, to
Orrii. G. Cocks, secretary of the mo
tion picture board of review, which
has offices in New York. The percent
age cf drinking places eliminated in
smaller communities is even larger, he
declared. The moral atmosphere of
manufacturins towns has been notice
ably unproved because of picture
houses, Mr. Cocks said.
