ROOSEVELT'S FALSEHOOD.
'. In his letter to the Progressive Na
tional Committee, largely devoted to a
discussion of the support given by the
German-American Alliance to Mr.
Hughes and the reasons Jor his own
defeat, Colonel Roosevelt included.
the following characteristic statement:
It is folly to pay heed to any of the
promises in the platform on which lit
(.President Wilson) now stands, in
view of the fact that almost every im
portant promise on which he" stood
four years ago has since been broken.
It is a maxim of the courts thai
when a witness is false in one state
ment, he may be regarded as false in
all.
The Democratic party, in Us plat
form of 1912, promised tariff reform,
and tariff reform is now a fact.. It
promised additional and more con
structive laws for the regulation ol
corporations and the Clayton anti
trust law is the result.
The platform commented upon thn
passage by congress of an amendment
providing for the direct election of
senators the resolutions, for the twe
amendments having been put through
by the Democratic party and both
laws are now written upo'n the statute
books. .
There was a plank for banking and
currency reform and the promise has
had its- fulfillment in the best banking
system ever given to the people of tht
United States and. is generally ap
proved by the financial world. . '
A rural credits system was promised
to the farmers of the country who had
been promised such reform by the Re
publican party for twenty years with
out fulfillment. As a result of the as
cendency of the Democratic party to
power, as a result of President Wil
son's leadership, both (branches of
congress have now passed a' rural
credits measure which eventually will
enable tenant farmers to own theii
own land without encumbrance. Thf
Democratic measure was passed al
most unanimously in both branches
the Republicans being obliged to give
it their approval.
Another of the important planks in
the Democratic platform was one ad
vocating agricultural co-operation with
the state. Such co-operation, with a
new and, modern marketing system
federal aid in road-building and othci
aids to the farmer, is now a reality.
. Justice to labor and the conserva
tion of the rights of labor were prom
ised in the platform of 1912 and Sam
uel Gompers, president of the Ameri
can Federation of Labor, has said
that more was done for the laboring
people under the leadership of Presi
dent Wilson and under the Demo
cratic party than under any previous
administration.
Conservation of the natural re
. sources of the country were promised
and there has been progressive con
servation, accompanied by sane devel
opment. No administration has ever
had a more efficient operation of the
interior department. 4i
The spirit of the platform as well as
its letter have been upheld.
No party in the history of the na
tion has ever written upon the statute
books a greater body of progressive
and constructive laws. Labor has
given its approval to the laws written
by the Democratic party to conserve
the interests of labor. No greater ad-vancc-has
ever been made in the inter
est of the farmer since the republic
was founded, and the farmers them
selves, more prosperous and more en
lightened than ever before, have given
their endorsement to what has been
done in their behalf.
- Real reforms have been accomplish
ed in the interest of the all the people.
There has never been a time when the
reserves of the national banks of the
country, representing the prosperity
of the people, have been larger.
' What has been done by President
Wilson for the greater liberty, free
dom and prosperity of the American
people constitute! the finest record of
any American statesman.
In times like these, when the wlthlc
world has been rem by wart when the
United States itself has been imper
iled, President Wilson, compelled as
he has been to give the major part of
his attention to the critical' problems
involving the peace and honor of the
nation, might well have been excused
if he had not been able to complete
his record of internal reforms. But he
has been as successful in his domestic
accomplishments as he has been in his
handling of foreign affairs and in up
holding the honor and dignity of the
nation.
MISFITS

Sarah, smiling shyly, softly said
"Sam."
"Sarah Sally." stammered Sir Sam
uel. "Sweet Sarah sweetheart."

A man arriving in Corvallis from
the east was so struck with the sand
east of the mountains that he com
posed the following poem, published
in the G.-T.:
I've been viewing sandy prairies
For these many hours past,
And the sands, with all their shifting;
And their driftings, seem to List,
While the jocund little sage brush
Lifts its head on every hand
And knee-deep and getting deeper
Does its worst to dam the sand.
And the railroad by the river

lamp hole at the Eastern end of the
lateral sewer now in place in the San
tiam Road and extending in a south
easterly direction along said Santiam
Road a distance of 3M feet, in Hack
Ionian's Heir's 1st Addition to the
City of Albany, Oregon,
Said sewer construction to be made
in accordance with the character and
ordinances of said City of Albany and
the plans, specifications and estimates
of the City Engineer on file in the
office of the Recorder of said city,
where the plans may be seen and
specfications and estimates obtained.
Bids will be opened at 7:30 o'clock
p. m. July 12, 1916.
No proposal or bid will be consid
ered unless accompanied by a certi
fied check payable to the City of Al
bany in an amount equa1 to five per

feited as fixed and liquidated damages
in case the bidder neglects or refuses
