BIO BUSINESS WORRIES.
Farm and Fireside: Curious things
happen in the world of big business.
Some time ago the financial district
of New York had a "peace scare."
There were persistent reports from
Europe that the belligerents were se
cretly opening negotiations looking
to ending the war, and promptly a
lot of stocks, especially in concerns
that have been making war materials
and profits, tumbled in price.
The rumors proved groundless;
prices firmed up again, and then came
along a "war scare" worry about the
possibility that the United States
would presently be drawn into the
war. It would seem natural that con
cerns making war supplies would ex
pect bigger business and more prof
its if this country should begin piling
np its orders on top of the European
demands. But the "war brides"
stocks didn't see it that way they
promptly got scared over the possi
bility of more war, and the same war
stock tumbled again.
It's hard to please these market op
erators. If the fanners of the south
had got half that panicky over cotton
in the last months of 1914, , there
wouldn't have been a bale in the coun
try today. The farmer may be regard
ed by the stock operators as a lamb,
but he knows enough to keep, his
head with him when the wise gen
tlemen of the Exchange lose all their
bearings.
THE U. S. IS' THERE. .
A few months ago the United States
mint bought a big lot of silver bul
' lion at 484c cents the ounce. That
purchase came at a time when silver
mines were threatening to shut down
1ecause of the low price. They
couldn't earn a living.
Right afterward the price of silver
began to go up. It touched 73 cents
an ounce a day or two before this
writing, at which 'point Uncle Sam
had made a profit of about a million
and a half of dollars on his one pur
chase. , The war has set the Old World
governments forcing out other forms
' of money in place of gold, which
they are hoarding. Silver, being uni
versally familiar, and being, "hard
money," looks good as a substitute,
so there must be an increase in its
mintage. The British empire and the
United States produce most of the
world's gold; the United States and
Mexico most of the silver. Any way
you turn, the United States of Ameri
ca is there. Ex. .
MEMORIES OF THE WEST.
Mrs. 'Eliza Spalding Warren, of
Walla Walla, Wash., has just had
published in book form her collection
of the memories of her father's and
mother's lives on the early western
frontier, as missionaries among the
Indians of Oregon and Idaho, says
' the Times. The subject matter of the
book is of special historical value. It
contains, among other facts, a diary
by Mrs. Spalding. This is the daily
record of that long, hard journey from
New York to Portland,, early in the
year 1836, when Drs. Whitman and
Spalding, accompanied by their wives,
came west in wagons and proved that
wheels could cross the Rockies.
It contains Dr. Spalding's personal
account of his work among the Nez
Perces and of the Whitman massacre
at Walla Walla, Wash. It contains
Mrs. Warren's own story of the mas
sacre. Mrs. Warren is one of the sur
vivors of that dreadful outbreak.
The book contains an account of
the Nez Perces Indians and a sketch
of the life of Chief Joseph, the Fon
' tiac of the West
' , Facta about the Whitman massacre
, and its causes are published in this
book for the first time. It is well
, worth I carting, for it is the first true
romance of the West. The book is
' entitled "Memories of the West."
There are one hundred and fifty
three pages and twelve illustrations,
it is bound In neat green cloth and
can be purchased for $1.50 at J. K.
Gill's in Portland, Mrs. E. S. Warren,
Walla Wall, Wash., or from L. C
Callaway. Brownsville, Oregon.
MISFITS
The Oregonian continues to bark
at the heels of President Wilson. -
Purely politics, it criticises the pres
ident continually.
As a matterof fact his Mexican pol
icy has been a humane and masterly
one. It was his business to wait. It
was not his business to fight until
there was occasion.
If such papers as the Oregonian
had their way the U. S. would long
ago have been involved in the Euro
pean war, the most diabolical in the
history of the world.
We would have been at war with
Xrexico at a time when it would have
been criminal.
At this time it is the duty of loyal
people to sustain the president, and
not growl, to help and not retard.
Men ought to be big enough to
rise above political prejudice when
occasion calls for it. as it does now.
The German-American Alliance
claims it secured the nomination of
Mr. Hughes. How do the English like
that? A president should be neutral,
likewise a candidate.
President Wilson has always been
neutral, tempered wih justice.
An editor elsewhere says he has
been gosh ding busy.
Funny ads. always interest one.
