ASHES FROM PIPE SET
FIRE TO BUGGY SUNDAY
Sometimes it costs even more than
ilic price of a pipe ami the tobacco
to smoke. Sunday morning nn old
seutlcmau was on his way to services
.iikI as lie jogged along in his buggy
behind the trusted old horse he smok
ed peacefully. He entered the city
from the cast and tinned into Fourth
stret. About that time he knocked the
ashes from his pipe and placed it in
hi pocket. The ashes were hot, and
ti.osc catching in the excelsior in the
back of the seat soon smoiildcrcl int;i
i blaze.
At Fourth and Jeiiersott two girls
saw smoke coming from the rear oi
the buggy and tried to tell the gen
tleman, but he was hard of hearing.
As the smoke broke into flames they
ran alter him. but no heed would he
pay. In front of the residence oi
Frank l'owell the fire had assumed
great proportions, and by that time
the occupant of the buggy came to
realize his peril. Mr. Powell and oth
er neighbors rushed to the assist
ancc with garden hose, lifted the lone
driver cut and unhitched the horse,
turned the hose on his blazing duster
and then on the buggy, which was
pretty nearly burn up by that time

W. A. Modine estimated the apple
crop and prune at about 75 per cent
of normal. F. M. Mitchell, the or
chardist. telephones that his obser
vations speak .for about 50 per cent
of normal. Instead of orchards being
in a good condition he says most of

doubts if more than one in twenty has
