A PLATFORM.
Someone has prepared the follow
ing platform for the coming republi
can national convention, to meet at
Chicago next week.
We favor immediate repeal of the
Federal Reserve Act and the substi
tution of a central bank controlled by
Standard OiL .
We demand prompt removal of the
income tax from the statute books and
the restoration of a system of taxa
tion which relieves the rich of, and
places upon the poor, the heavy cost
of government. .
We insist upon early elimination of
the Federal Trade Commission, so
that the great trusts may resume the
practice of unfair and cut-throat com
petition without let or hindrance.
We hereby declare for the enact
ment of a drastic law prohibiting any
public mention of the great measures
for the development of agriculture, of
commerce and industry put in force
under Democratic administration, be
cause discussion of these matters
tends to make votes for Woodrow
Wilson. .
We point with sorrow and sinking
hearts to the unprecedented prosper
ity of the United States and we here
by solemnly swear that not one nickel
of it isattributable to Democratic ad
ministration, but that our good fortune
is entirely and whole due to the
eclipse of the moon last July, or some
thing like that.
We urge immediate annexation of
the Hearst ranch. .
We hereby assert that the Wilson
administration has failed to assert the
American position with adequate vig
or in the negotiations wth Germany
over the submarne issue.
We hereby assure the German vote
that the Wilson administration has
been entirely too aggressive and per
sistent in-its dealings with the kaiser.
We love ourselves more than our
neighbors and propose to do unto
the common people just as Mark Han
na did unto them; only more so, etc.
TAXING PERSONALITY.
. Chicago is said to have definitely
abandoned trying to collect personal
taxes amounting to less than $25 a
year. It has found that the expenses
of collecting the taxes is more than
the receipts. Many other cities have
had the same experience, although
most of them still keep up the pre
tense of taxing personal property, ac
cepting such money as comes easily
and ignoring the rest New York has
drifted into the practice of assessing
the personal property of citizens
known to be wealthy, and ignoring
the rest which means that the vast
majority of citizens in New York are
hot even asked to pay personal taxes.
The tendency all over the country is
in the same direction. It' is felt more
and more that at least the goods a
family gathers for the making of a
home should be exempt. Ex.

candidate for representative in this
district. There is a heavy majority
against him, but if the voters will con
sider the ability of the two candidates,
Weathcrford will be elected.

something, evidently having bugs in
the head somewhere.

crowd, drew back his hand and hurled

velt The lion hunter was undisturbed
at the trivial matter and rode on.
There is a big opportunity these
days for the moody person to be ev
erlastingly depressed. Wars, murders,
accidents, catastrophes,' border trou
bles are enough to make the brain
flop sideways, if permitted to run
loose.

National Delegate
Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Jackson, of Hal
sey, were in the city yesterday. Mr.
Jackson is getting ready to go to St.
Louis to attend the national democrat
ic' convention as a delegate from this
district He' appreciated the splendid
vote he received for the position.
While east he will also visit relatives
and see the country. He will start next
Monday and be in St Louis before
the 14th with his ballot all ready for
Woodrow Wilson for president
