WEATHERFORD FOR CON
GRESSMAN. Albany people wilt be interested in
knowing how the nomination of M.
V. Weatherford for congressman is
taking in the valley. Here are two em
phatic expressions:. .
i From the Benton Courier: ' Mark
Weatherford of Albany has been nom
inted by the Democrats for congress.
The Prohibition party of the state has
endorsed him, and here is a tip that
Courier readers can bank on, Mr.
Hawley has a man against him this
" year who is going to win. . '. ';
. The independents (there are a lot
of them ip this congressional district)
are not going to come down to sup
port Hawley; the Prohibitionists are
not going unanimously for their nominee-
and the Democrats to a man will
support Weatherford. ,
I Mr.; Hawley is going to have' his
first real scrap for congress this fall.
For years he has had the election
almost handed to him, and he has ap
preciated it by being a standpat con-
- gressman in a progressive state; tak
ing the stump in the New England
states and working against what the
voters of his own state voted for,
i From Cannon's rule to the present
day Mr. Hawley has consistently
stood in with the eastern bunch of
politicians and financiers and been
' their handy man in pinches. His vot-
ing record on, roll calls is too open
proof of this. '

Democratic candidate for representa
tive in this district. There is a heavy
majority against him, but if the vot
ers wll consider the ability of the two
canddates, Weatherford will be elect-

PAYING ANIMALS. :
.' We have always talked diversified
farming and it is now a pretty gen
erally established fact that a small
farmer to be successful must practice
this method. A small farmer who
'bought ten ewes last year calls our
attention to his splendid profit for one
year. He paid $70.00 for the ten ewes
and it cost him $2.50 a head, or $25.00,
for their maintenance for one year,
which covered interest on money,
shearing, cost of feed, etc., total cost
for the ten ewes, $95.00. The ten ewes
dropped ten lambs which sold for
$6.00 a head, $60.00; the ewes sheared
100 pounds of wool, for which he re
ceived $35.00, a total of $95.00, which
exactly pays for the ten ewes and
their upkeep, leaving them clear at
the end of the year. Of course every
body realizes that sheep and wool are
Very high at the present time, but if
we should take an average of same
- in ten years we might find a result
something like the following: ' Ten
ewes at $3.50 a head, $35.00; mainten
ance, $25.00; total, $60.00. Ten lambs
at $3.00 a head, $30; 100 pounds of
woll at $18c, $18.00; total $40.00, which
, under these less, favorable circum
stances, would leave . the farmer ten
cwest costing him only $12.00. From
the above facts it would seem as if
every small farmer should have a few
well-bred ewes on his place. Port
