Daily Democrat F. P. NUTTING Lessee- Entered at the postoffice at Albany, ' Oregon, at second-class matter. Published every evening except Sun 1 ' day. Semi-weekly published Tues Y days and Fridaye. BUSINESS MATTER In ordering change of address, aub scrlbers should alwayi sive old aa 'mil at new addreaa, Established in 1865. THURSDAY, HAY 25, 1916 , GREAT IS Y. M. C A. Minneapolis News: The Y. M. C. A. is a social safety valve. It contra dicts the lie that young men to be decent must be sissies. It is proving that young men can be red-blooded and manful without being either rounders or libertines, -i . The naturally bad young man is - rare. Society often is to blame when the bounding life id his, veins turns to immorality as the easiest outlet. . Fill his hours full of clean recrea tion, keep his mind busy with clean thoughts and ace what happens. He will respect his body as a gift to be kept strong and wholesome. He wll have regard for the great mystery of life in himself. He will hold as sacred the great mystery of life in young wo- 4 manhood. ; " ' ' " " The average young man is a heal thy animal. If he were only that he would follow his natural instincts. Be ing endowed, however, with a brain and a soul he can be shown that all of his natural instincts must not be ' indulged. He can be taught not only that his own health and the health of his unborn children are at stake, but also that if society as a whole is to be clean the individuals composed of so- : ciety, including himself, must be clean. He can be made to see that he per sonally can make the social problem easier or harder to solve. ' Many young men who go wrong are contaminated by evil or thought less companions. They are the victims of suggestion. The Y. M. C. A. crowds so much that is healthy and. good in to the young man's life that evil is crowded out. It gives his healthy an malism its natural outlet in spirits and . games. :- . : ' The Y. A. C. A. avoids the negative attitude toward the social evil. It. does not content itself with telling the young man what he must not do. It takes the positive attitude by showing . him what he should do. It holds be fore him the ideal of physical strength and warns him that indulgence will weaken him. It shows him how the strong body is dependent on the clean mind. The gospel that it preaches is sane, praical and manley. And it gets results. It is helping to starve out the: social evil by depriving it of patrons. Isn't it a good thing to push along? - NO OCCASION TO CHANGE. ; " Pendleton E. O.: It is not likely the people will see any occasion for changing presidents. Wilson is mak ing good both with reference. to the war 'situation : and in i constructive statesmanship with regards' to eco nomic subjects. The country has ben efitted immensely by having him in office and common justice as well as good sense calls for keeping him there another term. ! " As matters stand Wilson probably cannot be defeated by anyone because : he is the country's logical choice. The very fact that Oregon republicans vot- , ed for Hughes is in itself a compli ment to the president. Not havin? ' Wilson upon' their ticket repnt-i voters have done the best thing they coufd by supporting the man who ac cording to the line the people have upon him measure up most closely to the Wilson standard. GLYCERINE AND BARK PREVENT APPENDICITIS The simple mixture of buckthorn bark, glycerine, etdj known as Adler-i-ka, astonishes Albany people: Be cause Adler-i-ka acts on BOTH low er and upper bowel, ONE SPOON FUL relieves almost ' ANY CASE constipation, sour sjtomach or gas It removes such surprising foul mat ter that a few doses often -relieve or. prevent appendicitis. A short trcat- . ment helps chronic, stomach trouble ,The INSTANT, easy action of Adler. i-ka is astonishing. The Woodwofth . Drug Co. ' DINNER CIRCUS DAY. ' . The ladies of the G. A. Many of them are to be congratu lated on their defeat.. ; '':,'. , There are two sides to running for office. These fellows who jump on Hen ry Ford may hear something drop. . Ben Olcott having been renominat ed by both the democrats and re publicans is bound to be reelected. The masses are not easily hood winked even by political bosses. Another Rounder. He leered at. me horribly and then A slimp hand slid over my quivering cheek. A jagged blade flashed downward as I cringed, Once, twice, thrice. And then it cut into my shrinking ; flesh! "I'm sorry sir," he said, "But 1 can't shave you ; If you you don't keep still." ' ""Lucky Editor." Ye editor was in luck this court. The grand jury let us down easily, and besides it's the first March term of court that a "little stranger" failed to take up at our house. For both we are truly thankful. The Baker Coun ty (Ga.) News. Where Was Jeff ? Bill Mutt was arrested last night charged with drunken and disorderly conduct and upon being arraigned entered a plea of guilty and paid a fine of $3.00 Roscburg Review. Some City. ' New York is a leviathan. It is "a city with more Jews than ever were in Palestine; more Germans than in any city in Germany except Ham burg and Berlin; more Bohemians than there are in Prague; and more Italians than there are in Rome. A birth every four minutes; a death ev ery seven minutes; a marriage every eleven minutes." (MacGregor in the National Municipal Review.) ' Don't you think for a minute Char lie Chaplin will give up his $600,000 a year for that of the presidency with only $75,000 up. After all our nervousness, it trans pires that crops are going to be good. Would Fix Him. Should Mr. Roosevelt be nominated by - the republicans, - every line he has -written, every word he has spok en, in the past four years against the party which made him and the men who for a long time served him with thorough loyalty would be quotable, and quoted, by the democratic man agers to prove that he should not as the head of the -republican party gain be elected.
