S)(E5)S Last Tuesday evening, April 11, the .young girls of Tangent gave a suc cessful surprise on the Misses Evelyn Bennett and Agnes Mehring. The girls met at the home of Miss Letha Shrader and first surprised Miss Ben nett, then went over and surprised Miss Mehring. Portland, a for mer instructor in Albany College, has been in the city today, the guest of Prof. Schmitt. He delivered an ad dress at the O. A. C. yesterday. Indian Missionary Mrs. Win. E. Hopkins, of the Wo man's American Baptist Foreign Mis sionary society, who. has been attend ing the convention at the Baptist church, went to Portland this morn ing to visit her mother. Mrs. Hopkins has served in India and is prominent in missionary work in her church. Funeral Today The body of the late Ida Sticr Haines, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Stiers, former residents of this county, and wife of R. B. Haines, ar rived in the city at 4:20 this morning and was taken to the rorimmer un dertaking establishment. The funeral was held at 11 o'clock this morning at the Providence cemetery, near Linnhaven. Young, of this city was elected moderator of the Central Wil lamette valley district of the Baptist church today at the convention being held in this city. Mrs. O. II. N'eptuue, of Albany was elected clerk, and Vir gil Carter, of North Palestine, was chosen as representative on the slate convention hoard. The convention will meet at N'orth Palestine church next year. The present convention, wlfich has been in session since Wednesday, is the largest and best ever held by the Central Willamette district. The iiicel amount of work accomplished. Some very fine addresses ami numbers have been heard. One of the splendid features of last evening's program was the debate be tween Mrs. Allan Banks and Mr. Fer guson, of O. A. C. on the subject, "Resolved that an efficient Sunday School is more vital to the welfare of a church than an efficient Young People's Society. The debate was spirited and brought out good argu ments on both sides. The session will close this evening with the business meeting of the Young People's Societies. Rev, W. H.
