NON-PARTIZANSHIP.
Gov. Lister, of Washington, has
come out in favor of a policy that
commends itself to the world, the non
partisan election of state, county and
city officials, and declares that he will
do his best to bring about such a non
partisan movement in Washington.
Partizanship is the curse of proper
legislation in the interest of the peo
ple, as, is well known even great meas:
tires receive small consideration from
members of one party when members
of another party propose them. Gov.
Lister declares that the merits of a
measure are lost in the bitterness and
jealousies for party advantage. The
move is one that will undoubtedly re
ceive a large following. Albany several
years ago adopted this policy in city
matters, one that has been a good
deal of benefit here in the administra
tion of city affairs. '
NO JOBHOLDERS WANTED.
The president's instructions that
federal office holders be ignored in se
lecting convention delegates is in ac
cord with the sentiment of the day and
looks to a literal fulfillment of his let
ter to ex-Congressman Palmer stating
the conditions on which he would ac
cept a renomination. '
' Because democracy has been out of
- office so much one spectacle was less
familiar in democratic than in repub
lican conventions. This was the spec
tacle of the collector of customs serv
ing as chairman of the state delega
tion, the collector of internal revenue
k-epresenting the delegation on the
resolution committee, the pension
agent barring hostile delegates as a
member of the credentials committee,
and the postoffice inspector and spe
cial treasury agents combing the cor-ridors-for
wavering gentlemen entitled
to seats. But even in Democratic con-
. ventions all these things have been
too frequent
A president will not be named for
a second term this year by a con
vention in which his own appointees
make up a majority or at least control
the balance of power. Officeholders
must base their claims to reappoint
ment on the merit of their official
service, not on their work as dele
'gates. For another reason jobholders
will also be scarce in the G. O. P.
convention this year. Probably the
old order of control by patronage

LIFE IN THE OPEN.
George Washington was a grown
"man before he ever saw a city of
over 5000 population. He was esscn
tially a farmer.
In a letter written in 1788 he stated
his views ' on agriculture in these
words: '
"The more I become acquainted with
agricultural affairs, the better I am
pleased with them. I can nowhere find
so great satisfaction as in those in
nocent and useful pursuits. In indulg
ing in these feelings I am led to re
flect how much more delightful to an
undebauched mind is the task of mak
. ing improvements on the earth than
all the vain glory which can be ac
quired from ravaging it by the most
(uninterrupted career of conquests."
When we measure the full import of
the ravages the. war is making in the
. old world, how it is debauching the
present manhood of Europe and con
demning future generations unborn
to economic slavery, we can grasp the
' truth and wisdom of the utterance of
the Father of our Country.
' Real happiness, genuine satisfac
tion, undiluted enjoyment of life can
best be found in truth can only be
found, save in exceptional cases by
keeping in close touch with nature. It
would be interesting to know just
what proportion of the truest content
ment enjoyed by the people of Ameri
ca is confined to the farm. The fig
urea would doubtless be startling as
well. ' Yet our urban population is
growing alarmingly; our rural popula
tion decreasing. It is a problem loom-
ing tip for some master mind to solve,
the question of keeping our bays on
the farm. The farm tenantry and rur
al credits propositions, worked out on
proper lines, will be a big step in the
right direction. The united States
senator or congressman who offers the
best remedy along these lines w.ll find
his name at the top of the roll of hon
or a few generations hence. News.

weak, sickly girl will exert more en
ergy in dancinj an hour than a wo
man will in washing that long.

Mrs. Kelly is alive now, residing near
Turner.

nett, recently preached a sermon on
fishing, with some excellent spiritual
