OUR TIMBER PRODUCTS.
The Portland office of the forest
. service has just issued the results of
a preliminary statistical study to show
the relation between the annual pro
duction of timber products and the
consumption of such material within
the states of Oregon and Washington
This study has brought out the fact
that Washington consumes tn her
timber industries over six billion
board feet or 82 per cent of her log
production, and 87 1-2 per cent of all
the wood cut from her forests an
nually, while Oregon uses in her tim
ber industries nearly three billion
board feet or 27 1-2 per cent in excess
of her log production and 16 per cent
in excess of the wood cut from her
forests each year. Owing to natural
feeotrraphic conditions, she draws
heavily on Washington for raw mater
ial for her mills and thereby conserves
her own resourcts.
Washington consumes 17 1-2 per
bent of her lumber production, or
nearly eight hundred million feet. Of
this amount, more than half is used
for building purposes, about 7 per cent
by the railroads, over one-third by the
wood using industries, and a small
per centage in mine work. Oregon
consumes nearly 20 per cent of her
lumber production, or over four hun
dred million board feet. Of this
amount, more than half is used by
the building trade, approximately 12
per cent by the railroads, 30 per cent
by the wood using industries, and a
small fraction (,2 per cent) in mine
work.
When it comes to a per capita use
of wood, the residents of Washing
ton actually consume in the form of
timber products, within the state 225
cubic -feet per capita annually, as
compared with 100 cubic feet per cap
ita for the entire Unietd States, while
Oregon uses 217 cubic feet per capi
ta. Eighty-two per cent of Oregon's
consumption and seventy per cent of
Washington's consupmtion are for
fuel purposes.

which be emphasizes the importance
of making religion attractive for chil
dren. "Grandparents can carry their re
ligious zeal to.o far," he says. "They
can harp too much upon the Bible
and church. Exhortations lose their
force when too often repeated. It is
always unwise to make one's self a
bore. Grandparents can render re
ligion odious by talking about it too
often and in the wrong spirit. Boys
cannot be religious in the same way
as old men, nor can little girls mani
fest their religion in the forms which
are the most congenial to their grand
mothers. It is foolish to try to make
a boy like a man or a girl like a wo
man. God will not permit it. The
Bible is an interesting book, and the
church is a divine institution, and the
truths of Christianity are of great im
portance, but they must not be made
a burden. Grandparents must not play
all their music on one string."

Street from the South line of Ninth
Street to the North curb line of
Thirteenth Street, in the City of Al
bany. Said improvement to be made in
the following manner to-wit:
First. By grading said street to the
proper subgrade.
Second. By paving the roadway of
said street full width with full in
tersections with asphaltic concrete
pavement on an o.$phaltic concrete
foundation.
Third, lly laying and constructing
asphaltic concrete headers.
Fourth. By constructing catch ba
sins. Fifth. By constructing inlets.
