FRIDAY, JANUARY 21, 1916.
MUST HAVE GOOD ROADS.
If the average life of a car be thre
years, it seems possible that by 1921
we shall have on our highways a total
of not less than 6,000,000 motor-vehicles,
or one for every twenty inhab
itants. This is about three times our
present registration. In ten states the
increase in five years has been four
fold, fassaxhusctts registered one ve
hicle for every 108 persons in 191C
and one for every 37.4 in 1915. In 191C
the population per car in Ohio wa;
149: today it is 277.
To care for this traffic we have ir
the United States about 2.125,000 miles
of country ror.ds, not counting streets
What mileage has been "improved"
it is impossible to say, for the word
has no standard. We arc probably
safe in assuming that for a satisfac
tory system n.ot less than 1.25O.O0C
miles of road must still be improved.
With the ever-growing traffic anc
with the consequent demand for bet
ter construction, the ultimate cost of
this system will not fall short of $1,
000.000.000, and its construction will
probably cover a period of not Icsf
than forty , years. These figures dc
not overstate the case. Many road?
have been and will be built too nar
row, too crooked, with excessivr
grades and inadequate pavements
These should be widened, straighten
ed, refcraded, and repaved. They wir
. also have to be provided with bridge'
designed for the increasing weight o
vehicles. However this may be, i'
seems safe to say that we have a hi?
job on our hands, and that if we are
to plan for its execution we must do
so in a big way.
One would naturally look for ex
perience to Europe. European condi
tions and customs are' so differen"
from ours that data derived from
them are of but limited value. We
must remember, too, thai they are ii
a much more backward state of mo
tor-vehicle development even if more
advanced in road administration. .
However much or little we ma-,
take from them, we shall also have to
consider our problem in the light ol
what teems to be in store for us. Ex
