OPPOSES COMPULSION.
The announcement that Presideni
Wilson will oppose compulsory mili
tia duty, provided for in 'the Cham
berlain bill, will be received with
great favor by the people of the coun
try generally. The war department is
reported to favor the compulsory
system; but this is to be expected
and is in keeping with the general
policy of war departments. Call it
what you will, excuse it all you will,
it is the very foundation of militar
ism, and there should go up a protest
from all over the country that shall
be fell at Washington. It is against
the principles of democracy, and sa
vors only of imperialism. Such a law
would be a blow to our institutions,
a strike at our liberties. Thrusting
twelve year old boys, or boys of any
age, into military service, except as
an extreme measur . is infamous.
President Wilson may depend upon
the support of the masses in his op
position to the measure.
THE COUNTRY INCENSED.
The people of the U. S. have a right
to be angry ovr the massacre of six
teen American citizens by a gang of
Mexican bandits, led by the notorious
Villa. A more cold-blooded tragedy
.was never enacted. It puts the rebel
general beneath consideration, and
places him where he will not be en
titled to consideration if captured
More than the stigma it places on
Villa it condemn Carranza, who had
been recognized by our government,
for neglect of duty. It could easily
have been prevented and should have
been. The case is one that calls for ?
strong policy on the p.-.rt of the gov
ernment, one that sh.'ll result in the
desperadoes being brought to justice
at any cost The people of the country
are thoroughly incensed and will back
any effort made to secure the capture
and punishment of the bloodthirsty
outlaws. The case, though, calls for
cool heads, and, first of all, Presiden
Carranza should be given a chance to
control the matter.
NOTHING IN THE GAME.
During all the time it is probable
that people will be looking for op
portunities to make a good deal of
money for a little expenditure. It is
this spirit that is at the bottom of
much of the gambling of the world
The old Lusiana lottery had devotees
to the last gap, and then the pntrons
. would bite at a bait from Europe.
From a raffle to a national lottery,
people are quick to invest, hoping for
even a small chance to make a big
landing. That old Spanish-prison bun
co game must have victims or it
couldn't be kept up. Some fool may
attempt to play the game, with only
one result as absolutely certain. And
what is the harvest. Hardly anyone
in the long run has anything to show
for their work; but they will always
have a bad conscience to disturb them,
whether successful or not.
