with the following features:
The insuring that newly-arrived im

The promotion of the naturalisation

The teaching of EnxlUh to r 11 for

guage. The first step, that of seeing that
nrdly arrived immigrant children are
placed in schools, is now being carried
out through cooperation between the
varioua school officials of the coun
try and the immigration officials at
tl-e ports of entry.
When a Kfoup of immigrants ar
rive, the inspectors at the port learn
to what localities the individual fain-
lies with children are going. They
then send to the proper school author
ities the names of the children they
can expect. The officials then make
strenuous efforts to prevent any eva
sion of 0e compulsory education laws
by getting the children into schools
as soon at they arrive.
In addition, the school authorities
are also actively engaged in "recruit
ing" work among the fathers of these
same children lo induce them to take
out naturalisation papers.
A first edition of 50,01)0 bright-col
ored, attractively printed posters, set
ting forth in Euclish and the six prin
cipal immigrant lamtipces. the .advan
tages of becoming a citiren, have been
published. The hurcr.u is tending
these posters to 25.000 postmasters
and ft.OHO school officials throughout
the country, by whom they will he
nosicd conspicuously to catch tl'e eye
of the unnaturlircd immigrant.
Kducation.nl authorities are also
following up this printed appeal with
personal talks to immigrants. A aer
ies of receptions is being planned at
which both government officials and
naturalized immigrants will tr.lk t
these men.
