DEMAND FOR HOGS.
The war has struck the hog good
and hard; but it is oniy the real thing,
the porker; not the human kind alone
The demand for pork of different
kinds for shipment to Europe is enor
mous. In one month alone $115.0(0,
000 worth of products were shipped tc
Europe for use in the armies. It is
an army diet. Fanners with big pork
ers need not fear a market for every
piece of pork from tl.e squeal to the
tail.
VILLA IS VE-YA.
Down in Mexico they spell a name
one way and pronounce it another. Vil
la is pronounced Ve-ya. Villa himself
is being twisted some these days.
USE PRINTERS' INK.
Enough candidates for chief of po
lice, or as the charter of the city an
tiquatedly has it, marshal, are now in
the field to make a warm campaign
The Democrat suggest that they use
printer's ink freely if they have good
reason' for running.
LINN A DAIRY COUNTY.
An industrial map just gotten om
in Portland gives the industries of
Linn county a agriculture, stock and
timber. That is good so far; but ii
leave out one of our best industries
dairying. Linn it a leading dairy sec
tion of the state, and should have that
as well as some other counties given
it. Great attention has been paid it.
and it is now one of the leading dairy
sections of the state. The Albany
creamery alone does a business of ov
er $200,000, and immense quantities
of cream is shipped out to Portland
and other places, the products of our
cows.
SECURING PEACE.
An eastern man is going to end the
war in the following manner:
Let us preach Peace; talk Peace:
think Peace: and SIXG Peace. Let us
establish iq the cosmic mind a power
ful thoupht wave that shall overcome
the force of the cannon, or the destru
tion of the dreaded shell. Let every
village, town, and city call together,
with fife and dram, every singer that
can ing, and every musician tl-at can
play, and let us have wonderfu' musi
cal performances and Peace Festivals
everywhere. For, as sure as the fife
and drum, and the brass band lead men
to slaughter, so ure will the Cosmic
Mind, thus attuned to Peace by this
musical demonstration, end this terri
ble carnage.
TAXES OREGON CITIES.
Oregon Voter: Salem has the low
est city tax rate of any city in Oregon
having 5,000 or more population. Las'
year as well as this year it had the
lowest rate, and this year's tax rate
is less than last year's. Following are
the tax rates levied for city purposes
by the seventeen counties of Oregon
having 5,000 or more population:
